Five Thoughts on Resident Alien‘s “I Believe in Aliens”

On the second season finale of Resident Dinosaur Alien, the Greys reached a deal with Harry’s people, that would allow him to leave Earth via an escape pod on the mountains if he gave up on humanity. Harry proved enthusiastic about the idea of leaving with his son, and decided to embark on a farewell tour of Patience. Meanwhile, Asta and Jay reconciled, Liv investigated the alleged circumstances of Peter’s death, and Ben continued to have trouble sleepwalking.

1. Hi Mike

The episode opens with none other than Dark Horse Comics founder and CEO Mike Richardson sharing a story about a UFO sighting he had as a kid, as part of a documentary interspersed throughout the episode. Liv is the final interviewee, proclaiming the title of the episode after she shares her experience with aliens. It proved to be a nice capstone to her story this season, after Thompson realized this week that there was more to her interest in aliens than juvenile fantasies, as it became clear there was a cover-up surrounding Peter’s death, and the appearance of the fake cops who wanted to check Liv’s garage after she personally (and illegally) impounded his van. It’s just a shame the sheriff can’t tell the new applicant for co-deputy — Joseph — isn’t honest either, but it’s probably easier for him to pass as a (hybrid) human soldier than an out-of-town officer.

2. Parenthood Reveals Who You Are

Harry says goodbye to Max in-person, but cowardly leaves Asta a video message instead. It’s the first sign he’s not sure agreeing to the Greys’ bargain is the right decision, which ultimately leads him to leave the Baby on the escape pod home, while staying behind to save Earth from the Greys. It’s also a good way to cap this season’s themes, with Harry commenting on how the experience of learning to love his progeny has changed him, and taught him to care for all humans, not just Asta. However, I’d argue Harry’s capacity to love was always there, he just needed new circumstances to realize it, just as we saw how Asta’s love for Jay didn’t diminish after giving her away, while her own mother remained very self-centered, or the way having Max didn’t change Kate’s dissastisfaction with her life. In any event, Harry proved he really is a hero this week.

3. Goodbye Baby, I Mean, Bridget

I’m a little sad Bridget — the hilariously imaginative name Harry settled on for his kid after Sahar described him as the bridge between their worlds — probably won’t appear next season, or if he does, then at least not without a major growth spurt. I had assumed the next season would see the boy formerly known as Bobby Smallwood being raised by Harry, and trying to fit in at school, so I was really looking forward to it, but I understand, one alien protagonist’s true form is probably expensive enough for the show. Like I was saying earlier as well, the fact Harry loved his boy enough to send him away to be protected by his people, demonstrated how selfless he can really be when his back’s against the wall, and it was really sweet and lovely when Asta consoled him when he broke down over how much he already missed his boy.

4. New Friends

Harry reveals his true nature to D’Arcy after she finds his human counterpart’s murder weapon in Asta’s closet (why are the skeletons always in the closet?), further proving how selfless he’s become, as well as reinvigorating the status quo for next season. (And for the record, D’Arcy calling him a dinosaur was such a great rug pull after the emotional intensity of her confrontation with Asta.) I’m glad our protagonist’s antics didn’t mess up Asta’s relationships again, and on that note, it’s great her reconciliation with Jay wasn’t interrupted this time.

Furthermore, the full vision from Goliath revealed Harry needs to team up with McCallister to save the world, explaining why he didn’t kill her last time, and why he surrenders when her SWAT team tracks him down. McCallister, who’s found evidence Joseph is a mole, understands Harry is the enemy of her enemy, and hopefully, this will mark the beginning of a beautiful friendship (which, yes, really ought to start with her repairing his front door.)

5. Oh My God!

Robert, Peter’s son, wasn’t into being adopted by Harry or fleeing Earth, so Harry gave him his sphere to protect himself. Turns out it was a bad idea: the Greys abduct him anyway, and take Harry’s tech for themselves. An even more diabolical twist unfolds next to Robert, as it’s revealed the reason Ben has trouble sleeping is because he is also an alien abductee, and so is his unborn child. What a twist: I can’t believe I didn’t see it coming, Peter’s backstory should’ve come to mind when Kate’s pregnancy became a “false positive.” I guess the Hawthornes’ story has become a lot more personal for Harry. Also, is this why Max can see Harry’s true form?

Bonus Thoughts:

– Harry really shouldn’t be so offended by Max dissing his art, given he knows from Goliath that he’ll get the hang of it someday.

– Something Harry got the hang of this season: he learned to understand “I know you are but what am I?”

– At this point, Mike’s wacky beliefs (like the Moon being fake) have to be a ruse to be underestimated right?

– Harry’s narration raises a great question, why do people say babies are so cute they want to eat them? For those unaware, it’s a regulatory response called “cute aggression,” and you can read more about it at Mic.

Well that’s all for now folks: hopefully it won’t be too long before season three arrives next year. Until then, may flies continue to stay out of your pies, please find the beauty in all bodies, and be more respectful towards sex workers than Thompson — in short, stay sweet.
