Five Thoughts on Resident Alien‘s “Escape From New York”

This week on Resident Alien, Harry and Asta found out why Goliath contacted them, and fled New York with his greatest treasure before Lisa Casper could catch up to them. Meanwhile in Patience, D’Arcy and Kate hung out after meeting at the gym, Ben was forced to confront the issue of the town not having a decent doctor, and Thompson was gifted a bunch of Sam Hodges’s books.

1. An Egg?!

While Harry is running around Times Square causing everyone to think he’s one of its costumed characters (a situation that gets resolved pretty quickly), Violinda Darvell reveals to Asta that Goliath turned to stone and died six months ago. When Harry learns this, he marches into the art studio and smashes Goliath’s remains, revealing there’s an egg inside; Violinda confirms she and Goliath were in love, and that the child is hers too. Gotta say, despite the existence of trans men and seahorses, it’s still surprising to hear a guy (even an alien one) got pregnant. Harry vows to protect the child after Lisa Casper shows up, and poignantly reflects on how it is a hybrid of two worlds, just like he has become. Aw; and just imagine how Liza might react to having a sibling…

2. Pregnancy Blues 2

After sneaking out of the Hawthornes’ home, D’Arcy goes to the gym for the first time in years, and finds Kate there. Afterwards, they hang out at her bar, where Kate realizes — after tasting a familiar flavor in the beer — that she may be pregnant. Wait, so all the horniness between her and Ben at the start of the season was actually a plot point? I’m floored. D’Arcy congratulates her, but Kate isn’t so sure, admitting she finds having a child means basically putting her life on hold for 18 years. (Poor Max.) D’Arcy suggests Ben might understand, although she avoid mentioning that she hung out with him while Kate was away to explain why. Which brings me to…

3. More Spineless Than Sweet

I’m beginning to dislike Ben’s conflict-free approach to everything: OK, I can understand wanting to avoid Kate knowing D’Arcy spent the night at their house, but it’s only going to backfire (if you don’t want to look like you’re hiding something, don’t hide something.) Then he has to be strongarmed (no pun intended) into dealing with the incompetence of Ethan Stone’s elderly replacement, Dr. Smallwood, whom he suggests take a vacation, instead of informing her she’s fired. (Thank goodness for Nurse Ellen’s brusqueness.) And throwing a surprise birthday party at Harry’s home to convince him to take up the job full-time? I think I would’ve had the same reaction to that intrusion. (“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”)

4. Irony Alert

Thompson receives a bunch of Rex Monday detective novels — that Sam once promised to lend him — from Abigail at a yard sale she throws. Mike tries reading the books to take his mind off, but their noir stories can’t help but make him feel something is amiss, and that Abigail is the femme fatale who turns out to be innocent in Sam’s murder case. He tells Dan the last time he made a mistake, his partner died, causing the senior Twelvetrees to reveal Joe’s Diner is named after a friend he lost in Vietnam, whom he struggled for the longest time to accept he could not have saved; he tells Mike that if he feels he should do something, then he should pursue solving Sam’s murder. To be clear, that’s just going to lead Thompson and Baker back to Harry: oops. Anyway, the sheriffs enter Sam’s office, and after remembering a plot point from the books, discover a list of names connected to the Galvan/Powell Group.

5. Holy Mackerel!

Harry and Asta take the train back to Patience. While Asta goes to get snacks, Lisa corners Harry, but even a trained killer like her is no match for the alien, who casually dodges and blocks all her blows, and only winces slightly when she strikes him in the chest. (He can be a real badass when he wants to be.) Harry eventually grabs and smashes her through the window; as his smaller set of arms emerge to choke her, Lisa finally realizes he’s the alien, but is promptly decapitated by another train. Good riddance to that murderous sadist, but whoa: this show can be violent, but seeing Harry, his face half covered by blood, and asking Asta if she brought the ice cream sandwich he requested, was a whole new level of black comedy. (Also, that’s another body on the trail leading back to Harry; yay.)

Bonus Thoughts:

– Goliath is seen in the opening flashback as having arrived on Earth via a little wormhole, which raises all kinds of questions about how Harry could return home.

– This episode was more dramatic than funny, but maybe it had all the funny it needed when Harry’s narration got interrupted by the colors at the start.

– Poor Mrs. Patel.

See you all next week for the midseason finale, “Alien Dinner Party.” Will the egg hatch? We’ll see! Now let’s get out of Harry’s house before he really gets mad.
