Five Thoughts on Riverdale‘s “Anatomy of a Murder”

All right. This is it. The penultimate episode. Everything is going to hit the fan and hopefully it’ll be completely bonkers. It all starts now. Spoilers galore here! Seriously, we’re going to spoil who murdered Jason.

This is your last chance to quite reading without having the crux of the season spoiled for you.

1. Ah, Now It’s Getting All Lannister-Ey

Let’s start with the first big revelation: turns out, the Coopers are actually Blossoms too. Which means the coupling between Jason Blossom and Polly Cooper is a big ol’ incest! So either Cheryl’s kind of . . . over the top-ness with regards to her brother was either foreshadowing, a red herring, or right on the money or a bizarre combination of three. This did bring some answers as to why Mr. Cooper stole Sheriff Keller’s files and also tried to force an abortion on Polly.

2. Parody Breaking Bad

One thing I want to highlight, if only because of how hilariously over the top it was when Cheryl brought concerns to her mother and she does her whole “this has been what it’s always been about” rant in a barn full of barrels of maple syrup. It really feels like “Clifford Blossom: The Aunt Jemima Heisenberg” in it’s madness that I burst out laughing. And it doesn’t end here!

3. They Fuck You Up, Your Mum and Dad

This could be the underlying theme around this whole show. Sure, this show is over the top and definitely goes into the melodramatic, and we love it for it. But for all the bad in this show, there is something going on underneath. It’s how the actions, words, and prejudices of the older generations damage and warp the younger generations. Not one of these kids has escaped being damaged in some way or form by the adults being… well let’s face it, outside of The Andrews… spiteful, irresponsible assholes. Not saying some of these parents don’t love their kids but very few of them have ever had self-awareness of what their pettiness does to their children. Most of it emotional damage… but one very physical one.

Speaking of, last chance to turn away!

4. The Killer Revealed

Clifford Blossom.

Clifford Blossom murdered his son Jason. There’s no ambiguity to it, we watch it alongside the kids a father murder his own child. It is a rough scene and rougher more the impact it has on everyone. Honestly, that was a lot more of a darker reveal than I was expecting. But the big question still remains: Why? Why did he do it? I wish that Jughead narration didn’t actually be so blunt with such an obvious question, but hey, this show can be a bit blunt. We won’t get the answer from Clifford, as the last image of the episode shows some more foulness afoot, but it was a harrowing episode nonetheless.

5. Fallout

That is what the finale is really going to be about, the fallout from this mad multi-car crash of a mystery finally reaching its climax. None of the characters are the same from the beginning of this season and the preview of the finale shows we’re not done yet. The reason Clifford did it, Hiram Lodge coming to Riverdale (along with the hints of another wicked character from the Archie Comics) and more as the group are going to try and overcome this in some way. It’s going to be quite the ride.
