Five Thoughts on Riverdale‘s “Silent Night, Deadly Night”

Okay. Mid-Season Finale. Let’s do this. Spoilers ahead.

1. Betty Cooper is the Best

Really, Juggy. You don’t deserve her. After Jughead really screwing up last week by calling her off for trying to get involved with the Serpents. So, after their relationship was put on a more turbulent level, it was really good to see her call him out that it’s not his decision to decide how involved she gets. There’s is tension between them, even with the affection still there, but it’s Betty re-establishing control in their relationship. And it doesn’t involve an underadge character doing a striptease in a biker bar (which I really should have mentioned last week because what the hell?!).

2. ♪Cheryl’s Gonna Kill You♪

I love Madelaine Petsch. She is absolutely fantastic. As Cheryl becomes more and more unraveled, now it being revealed the Blossom’s are out of money. Later, we have a scene between Cheryl, her mom and Nana Rose Blossom after Cheryl went and bought elaborate (and creepy) Christmas decorations. It’s a small, but really good scene as Petsch puts on the the barely hidden contempt behind a cold, brittle smile, like she is just containing her desire to laugh in her mother’s face. It’s creepy. It’s awesome. It’s great acting!

3. Svenson’s Sin

So, the Red Herring involving Joseph Svenson/Conway and the Black Hood wasn’t a Double Red Herring As we delve deeper into the history of the Riverdale Reaper, so many things are being tied back together. The Black Hood, the Reaper, the Blossoms, even Betty’s family come into play as Archie and Betty make their confrontation with the Black Hood. I won’t lie though. This felt very quick. Like the creators were going “Ah, damn! We’re at the middle of the season and we still got a lot left.” I mean, I won’t complain too much. As for as plot lines go, the Black Hood made for some creepy moments but just that. Perhaps it’s for the best that it can end so we can go on to…

4. This Really Is Teen Drama Sons of Anarchy

So. Damn, Jughead.

Penny has had both Jughead and his dead in a vice grip for a while now and Jughead decides to take matters into his own hand with some of the other younger Serpents. I won’t tell you what they do to Penny (it’s not murder! Geeze!), but it is definite setup for the back half of the season and has set a rift between Jughead and FP. Like Petsch, Cole Sprouse is really good in this scene, selling some real good intimidation while also showing his frustrations with the situation he is becoming more and more buried in.

5. Oh Please Don’t Do the Love Triangle

Sooooo, yeah they’re gonna start setting up the Love Triangle. What “Love Triangle”? Come now, if you know “Archie” you know the Love Triangle. Where Archie can’t decide between Betty and Veronica and for some damn reason those two like him. This episode does end with Archie and Veronica and Betty and Jughead on much better terms, but they have been seeding that Betty and Archie have feelings for one another still and just…

You know… you guys don’t really have to do it, you know? I mean, maybe because the last season and a half you’ve introduced relationships; Betty and Veronica, Betty and Jughead, Veronica and Cheryl, e.t.c., that are more interesting than that Love Triangle. And believe it or not: You can make a romantic relationship interesting without having to involve a love triangle. I know, it’s crazy! You could also spend the time not bringing that relationship back by involving characters like Josie and Kevin and Reggie a bit more in the story!

And with that, we are on hiatus for the next month. Enjoy your presents, or just the time off really. It won’t be long before we have another dose of “Wait… What?”
