Five Thoughts On Runaways‘s “Bury Another”

Runaways is back baby! And they’ve finally run away. The first season was arguably the best of any Marvel television and so far, the things the first season did right have been carried over but the stakes are even higher. On the run, they’re wanted by the cops and their parents. In “Bury Another,” secrets come out, reunions happen and someone returns. Let’s jump into this but be warned, there will be spoilers.

1. He’s Not Dead!

Right off the bat we find out what happened to Robert Minoru. He’s not dead but he did get a pretty decent knock in the head. Jonah brings his body to the rest and completely loses it. He’s not even hiding who he is anymore. He goes off to the parents about the ship and what he wants to do and threatens the kids. He claims to know where they are hiding and will kill them all if PRIDE does not cooperate. However, not all of PRIDE is needed. He tells the Wilders that they are not needed anymore but everyone else needs to get it together and do what he says or else. The Wilders leave but the rest of PRIDE basically decides that they should help get rid of Jonah even if that means getting him his ship and letting him go. All of this is kind of crazy because we’ve hit a point where there is no more pretending with the adults. Everyone hates each other and wants this to be over one way or another. I think we need to keep watching the adults here because as the kids get tighter, they all fall apart.

2. Family Reunion

As we saw in the last episode, Gert leaves the house and goes to the hospital. However, it’s not for what I thought. I thought she was truly going home because this really has all been rough on her. Turns out, this was all about her medication and she used Chase’s name to get them. Because she’s a minor, a parent has to come so Janet shows up and she goes with it. Chase eventually goes to the hospital to get her and he has a very sad and awkward reunion with his mom. The thing about Chase is that even though he’s very privileged, he’s got some really bad stuff going on at home. His dad is extremely abusive and always has been. He hits and berates both Janet and Chase and Janet standing there trying to make excuses for him just brings all that pain back to him. This leads him to a collision course with Gert and not going to lie, he’s pretty right here. Gert is definitely going through stuff but she’s also been very narrow sighted when it comes to Chase. He’s done everything and been really patient with her as she goes through all this and she goes off and does this without even thinking how hard it is for him. Now, the tragic part of this is that you can see his father jump right out here. He’s immediately cold and petty (when he tells everyone what happened) and it’s all very Victor of him. The apple doesn’t fall so far from the tree??

3. Julian Gone Wild (get it?)

Okay so you won’t get it until I literally tell you what happens but it’s a good joke. Jonah is a desperate man. He’s dying and in need of a sacrifice but no one wants to help. Frank and Leslie deny him and refuse to keep this going and without them, he’s basically on his own. Jonah is also violent and completely unpredictable so he takes matters into his own hands. Now that he doesn’t need the Wilders, he goes after Geoffrey when he’s at the gym working out. He kills Geoffrey’s trainer and attacks Geoffrey with his powers and decides to take him as his new sacrifice. This had me going because I genuinely thought Geoffrey was dead but the kids come to the rescue at the Church of Gibborim after they found out what’s going down thanks to Gert’s little impromptu family reunion. This all plays out very exciting but the most interesting bit is the kids taking Geoffrey. I can’t possibly figure out what they want to do with him but I’m excited to see Alex mess with his dad a bit.

4. Everyone Comes To Alex

Alex is in kind of a weird place. He’s no longer the leader of the group but he’s the best with computers and he’s the man with a plan with what he was able to get from the school. Since he’s been back at the house, that’s what he has focused on. It’s all that’s driven him for the last few days. He’s not exactly isolated himself but this has been his focus…that is until Nico and Karolina come to him with all their relationship drama. This is the most levity of the episode and even then it’s still kind of serious subject matter. Nico and Karolina, like Gert and Chase, are having problems and because Alex knows Nico the best, she goes to him and it’s also why Karolina goes to him. It’s so awkward and funny and it’s stuff like this that makes you remember that this is a show about teenagers after all and with teen dramas comes romantic DRAMA like you wouldn’t believe.

5. The Big Reveal

At the end of the episode, Karolina and Nico reconcile and Karolina finally decides to come clean about what she’s been up. She tells Nico that she’s been seeing Jonah and learning a lot about her powers and what he actually is doing at the dig site. She also tells Nico the piece of all of this that Nico never had – that Jonah killed Amy. Karolina immediately hugs her and tells her that she hopes she did the right thing by telling her all of this. Nico hugs her back but is clearly shaken up by all of this. I actually really loved this because it puts to bed my belief that Karolina is the one who will turn on the rest of the group. You may be wondering why I’m so hung up on someone turning on the group but it’s all rooted in the comic. A huge turning point for these kids is when Alex is revealed as the betrayer and Gert dies (only to come back in the new comic book series that you should all read) and that’s definitely something that will happen here. I don’t think we’ll lose any of the kids (television works very differently) but we’re definitely going to have one of them revealed as the betrayer. I don’t think it’s Alex and it definitely won’t be Karolina after this. Will it be my favorite basic white boy Chase??? Don’t hurt me this way Chase.
