Welcome one and all to Multiversity’s very own ‘Witching Hour,’ in which we take a look at Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Join me this season every Monday for my recap the show’s final season. This week, the Fright Club celebrates two weddings while dealing with the second, unsettling Eldritch Terror. We also delve deeper into the mythology behind these Eldritch Terrors. Warning, spoilers to follow.

1. The Uninvited

Now that the Eldritch Terrors are descending upon Greendale, things are about to get real gruesome. And there’s no better evidence of that than the beginning of this episode. The second Eldritch Terror manifests as a homeless man, who is literally rotting. It arrives at the home of an unsuspecting mother and her child. The woman refuses to let the man in and seals her fate. After turning the man away, he appears inside her apartment and rips out her heart. It turns out, this Terror takes vengeance on the “heartless” for turning away someone less fortunate.

2. It’s Wedding Season

You know what I love? When Hilda is happy. Lucy Davis’ Aunt Hilda is one of the most lovely people on this show. Sure, she made a deal with the devil in her youth ensuring an unnatural long life and supernatural powers, but one thing is clear: she loves her family and will literally die for them. So sign me up for an episode showing off how happy she is to be marrying the love of her life. Unfortunately, there always seems to be some kind of hiccup getting in the way of Hilda’s happiness. I mean, all she wants is to be wed while dressed up as a character from her favorite horror movie. Sadly, the Uninvited has other plans.

And if that wasn’t enough to occupy this jam-packed episode, its revealed that Sabrina Morningstar is also getting married. To Caliban. Politically this makes sense. The prince and queen of Hell ruling together would surely please Lucifer. Sabrina Spellman, however, doesn’t quite agree with her counterpart. Spellman actively tries to break the two up by impersonating the queen of Hell by telling Caliban he needs to prove himself via castration. Can we all agree now that Sabrina Spellman is the worst? The two meet in their dollhouse pocket dimension so that no one will discover the two of them. Morningstar forgives Spellman for her transgression, brushing it off as trival (even though Spellman tried to break off their wedding), and even invites her and a guest to the wedding in Hell.

3. The Cunning Saves The Day

While all of the wedding subplots are unfolding, we gain some insight about the Eldritch terrors from Roz and Harvey. While the couple are engaging in a heavy PG-13 make out session, The Uninvited shows up (the guy just picks the most inconvenient times.) and would likely have been turned away if not for Roz’s cunning abilities. They feed their guest and make him as comfortable as they can. He leaves and no harm comes to them. Roz is so freaked out that she simply has to spend the evening with Harvey and the pair wake up to drawings of all eight Terrors.

Hey remember when Harvey was an artist? This series has suffered from being overstuffed that I forgot that it was a passion of his way back in season one. And that he’s pretty good at it. So Harvey has drawn all eight of the Eldritch Terrors and he takes them to the coven where Ambrose dissects the drawings and uses his vast knowledge to tell everyone about them. Now that they know of The Uninvited, they can invite it in so nobody will get hurt further.

4. An Unpopular Guy

While the coven and the mortals are terrified of the Eldritch Terror, Father Blackwood continues on his quest to unleash the ultimate evil. He invites his guest in, proclaims to be his priest, and points him toward Hilda’s wedding. Now having been warned about the Terror, the coven takes steps to prepare for his arrival. It’s amazing what a little bath will do. The Uninvited shows up to Hilda’s wedding in style, looking like he’s wearing his Sunday Best. And as Spellman and Nick Scratch usher the wedding while passively flirting with one another, they mistakenly deny the Uninvited to the wedding, sealing their fate.

Nick gets all dramatic and rips his shirt off and offers himself as a sacrifice. That guy really is a sadist, huh? The Uninvited sheds some more light on the nature of the Terrors, acknowleding The Darkness and something called The Weird. He says he was among the first things in the universe, the first thing shunned. I think, he’s just really lonely. Spellman remembers Morningstar’s wedding and the invitation and takes The Uninvited to Hell where Lucifer, Lilith, Morningstar and Caliban are like “NO GTFO.” Sabrina, once again bringing her problems to someone else to solve.

The two Sabrinas devise a plan to trap the Uninvited outside of space and time within their secret pocket dimension. However, the way in which they do this is particularly shitty. After telling everyone how lonely he was, Sabrina Spellman offers to marry The Uninvited, never leaving him alone. (Wait for it.) She then says she wants to fast track the honeymoon and brings him into the dollhouse and leaves him there. I’m not saying this thing doesn’t deserve to be locked away for eternity, I’m just saying Sabrina punked the shit outta him.

5. Hilda’s Hitched

After all the excitement, the Spellmans just want to go to bed, but Hilda, having sacrificed her wedding day, has one more request. She wants to be married as she originally intended: Dressed as the Bride of Frankenstein. It’s a nice quiet moment in an otherwise loud episode. What’s weird though is that Sabrina is dressed up as herself from the comics. It’s supposed to be a clever nod to the comics, however i find it a little weird. She’s cosplaying as herself? I don’t know… Anyway, if Hilda’s happy I smile.

Stray Thoughts

– With how overstuffed this episode was I forgot to mention that Sabrina starts to dip her toes in the dating world again. She goes out with a guy from school and Melvin from the academy. Neither have that Harvey/Nick appeal though.

– I’ll probably do this a bunch but I just want to reiterate that while I think Kiernan Shipka is a wonderfully talented actress and plays Sabrina very well, my distaste for her character continuously grows. I’m having such a hard time rooting for her that I’m sympathizing with an evil entity. It’s bad.

– Lets take a second to appreciate Michelle Gomez and Luke Cook in their respective roles.

With two out of eight Terrors taken care of, next week is about to get a little weird. See ya then!
