Welcome one and all to Multiversity’s very own ‘Witching Hour,’ in which we take a look at Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Join me this season every Monday for my recap the show’s final season. With the penultimate episode of the season upon us, Sabrina Morningstar must navigate her way through an alternate universe.

1. Quiet on the set!

This episode picks up right where we left off a couple episodes ago. Having gone through the black hole in her mirror with the hopes of pushing back an Eldritch Terror, Sabrina Morningstar is greeted by her aunties, only they don’t look like Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis. Hilda and Zelda are played by Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick, who respectively reprise their roles from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Sabrina has been transported to another reality where her home is a film set and her life, a TV show. This concept is fun and really unique. The show thrives on blending genres and I go all in for this kind of stuff. Sabrina quickly realizes that something is terribly wrong with this reality. The other “actors” stress the importance of showing up to set prepared to work. In this reality, Blackwood is the showrunner, Lilith is the script supervisor, the real Hilda and Zelda are stand ins for the “recast” aunties and a puppet Salem is the star of the show.

2. Salem the Talking Cat

I find it quite funny that from this show’s perspective, Salem was the star of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I mean it makes a lot of sense. While Melissa Joan Hart was indeed the titular Sabrina, from what I can remember, the talking cat had all the best zingers and was a pretty major focal point of the show, the comedic relief, if you will. Salem is top dog cat on this set. Sabrina learns he’s also an Eldritch Terror, The Endless. He also serves as head writer of the show. It’s a pretty good bit, and succeeds at providing an interesting antagonist as well as providing some meta commentary. The fact that he’s voiced by the sassiest cast member is wonderful. We’re getting some good Lucifer stuff between this and the previous episode.

3. Big Hits. Fan Favorites

This episode goes out of its way to be fan servicey, but not the detriment of the episode. When Morningstar discovers the stand ins, Miranda Otto tells Sabrina that their roles had been recast despite she and Lucy Davis being “big hits. Fan Favorites.” She goes on to tell Sabrina that as stand ins, they sleep under the beds of the “real” aunties. Later, Sabrina looks under the bed only to find Elspeth as her stand in. She finds Ambrose in the green room, she learns previous cast and crew members get sent to when they screw up production. The green room houses a meat grinder that Ambrose operates, and in it, goes the cast members who get three strikes. Yikes… They’re ground up to feed Salem! Harvey tells Sabrina that they’re dating and it’s “cannon” while Nick is Harvey’s stand in until he later gets “promoted.” And as for the love of her life? Caliban is relegated to set designer and is taken aback when Morningstar touches him. Apparently cast and crew don’t mingle. He tells Sabrina that he’s building a new set: A Void.

When Sabrina tries to warn everybody that they’re within an Eldritch Terror and that Salem is an Eldritch Terror calling forth the final Eldritch Terror, the “Aunties” push back and tell everyone to carry on as usual. It’s a little suspicious.

4. Fur Faced Fink

After discovering the truth about Salem, Sabrina goes to confront him. Sabrina tries to get him to understand that the Void will consume him too. When he argues with her, she discredits his claims about being endless by giving him the script. It’s blank. After the Void arrives, there is nothing. Appealing to his will to live they try to rewrite the next episode. Unfortunately the “Aunties” aren’t just recast characters, they’re servants of the Void, there to ensure it’s arrival.

5. Enter the Void

Sabrina and Salem make a break for her mirror, which has been moved to set storage. Sabrina tries to find her friends but half of them are also servants of the Void. Ambrose, Zelda, Hilda, Harvey, Roz, and Theo have all been killed and Sabrina has no choice but to run for it. As Sabrina and Salem run for their lives, the set begins to be sucked up into nothingness. With the Void barreling down on them, Sabrina crashes into her mirror and the episode ends with a “To Be Continued.”

Well that was fun. However, I’m not so certain the show can stick the landing. There are many things that have to be wrapped up, and unfortunately, I don’t think that will be handled as neatly as I’m hoping for. With one episode left, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has some heavy lifting to do before it reaches the finish line.
