We’re on to episode 6 of our Star Wars: Resistance recap. But first, a big shout out to Christopher Chiu-Tabet for stepping in last week to review episode 5 while I was on my own refueling mission.
Anyway, onto this week’s review. Remember: the spoilers are strong with this one.
1. Another day, another crisis
The Colossus continues its run of bad luck, as its almost completely out of fuel. Of course it’s up to Kaz and crew, children though they might be, to brave the perils of the universe and save the day. Kaz, Torra, CB-23, Flix, and Orka pilot a shuttle to Flix’s home planet of Drahgor III in order to rustle up some fuel; they almost crash land in the process, thanks to a pretty nasty dust storm that sends them all tumbling out of their seats (Shouldn’t they be wearing seatbelts?? Isn’t this a kids show??). Kaz saves the day, obviously, but my favorite moment was seeing Orka and CB-23 tumbling in a circle while gripping each other in the background, like a weird space ballet.
2. Home Sweet Home
The reason the team has come to Drahgor III is because it’s Flix’s home planet and, as luck would have it, his family owns a fuel station. Flix expresses some trepidation about returning home, but Orka tries to reassure him with this episode’s lesson of the week: “Family is family, they’ll love you no matter what.” Unfortunately, that sentiment seems to be wrong, as his cousins aren’t exactly thrilled to see him; there’s a lot of huffing and puffing between Flix and his cousin, Flanx, who’s now in charge of drilling operations. Flix clearly left the family on bad terms and after some pretty harsh (for a kid’s show) words between the two, it’s revealed that Flix left the planet to… become a cantina singer?! I desperately hope this comes into play in a future episode. They mentioned it once or twice more during the episode, but that’s not enough. The fans demand Flix singing in a cantina, stat.
3. The latest edition to the Star Wars Universe… dragons?
The central conflict in this episode occurs when it’s revealed that Flanx and his crew have been engaging in deep-core drilling. Flix is appalled at this and it quickly becomes apparent why: according to Gozzo legend, dragons live deep within the core of Drahgor III. The dragons and Gozzo are able to exist in harmony so long as the Gozzo don’t get greedy and drill far down into the core, which, surprise! That’s what Flanx and his team are doing. There are a series of earthquakes that Flix insists is the dragon, but Flanx insists that it’s all just a big made up story He explains away the noise of a roar as the drill just getting stuck — which it appears to be. Kaz, always eager to help, agrees they’ll descend into the depths of the planet to fix the drill in exchange for fuel. It’s pretty obvious at this point that they’ll probably find dragons down there, which, whatever, but I’m a little confused at this addition to the Star Wars creature universe. Dragons seem very… un-Star Wars-y? They could’ve at least given them a different name not associated with mythical creatures that exist in our own world. I mean, that ice stingray from a few episodes back got his own name. What gives, Filoni?
4. Family is forever
Let’s cut to the chase: the dragons are real, they encounter them, and CB is able to figure out that generations of living underground makes them impenetrable to blasters, but very sensitive to light. After a whole lot of tense action (dare I call this episode stressful/scary?) and teamwork, they’re able to scare the dragons back into their cave and Flanx uses the drill to lock them back in there. Problem solved!
Flix being right about the dragons coupled with them having to work together during a near death experience puts Flix and his cousins back on good terms. After all, they realize that the dragon wasn’t trying to hurt them (not entirely, anyway), sa Flanx says, “that creature was only trying to protect its kin.” Family is important, see kids? You gotta stand by them, even if they leave home in search of a better life of cantina singing and then crash land back home looking for free fuel and spouting off stories about dragons. Remember, you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.
5. Okay but more importantly can we talk about Gozzos
I know Flix isn’t new to the series, but guys. GUYS. Gozzos are so cute and funny looking, I can’t stand it. Does anyone else feel this way? Their legs are SO LONG and their bodies are SO ROUND. And we got to spend an entire episode in the company of so many of them! What a delight! I read once that they were based on one of the original character designs for an Ewok which like, can you even imagine? I will never get over it.
