Five Thoughts On Star Wars: Resistance‘s “Signal From Sector Six”

We’re back on the Colossus this week expect actually we’re not as Kaz and Yaeger take a trip to see a familiar face in this week’s Star Wars: Resistance. Check out our Five Thoughts on the episode down below, but remember that there are spoilers abound.

1. Going On A Field Trip

The most striking element of this episode, other than the fact that it contains a familiar face, is the fact that it takes place almost entirely away from the Colossus. That’s something I wasn’t exactly expecting of this show given how much effort was put into establishing and expanding the setting so far, but it is Star Wars and sometimes you just have to have an episode about flying spaceships.

I think it helped, overall, to remind the viewer that there’s a larger galaxy outside of the Colossus full of people who need help and that there are the few out there willing to put their lives on the line to help them and it’s those few that Kaz is supporting in his mission. It was a nice breather away from the platform to put into perspective just how important Kaz’s work is.

2. The Return Of Dameron

Well, this was certainly a pleasant surprise. I tend to keep away from next episode previews because, honestly, these episodes generally hope one or two big things going for them and having at least one of them spoiled beforehand can tend to make episodes feel pretty slight. At least, that’s what I found at times with Rebels and the Rebels Recon previews. Going into this episode with no prior knowledge that Oscar Isaac would be returning as Poe Dameron was the nicest surprise and, honestly, the only thing this episode really has going for it.

The actual plot of this episode, as we’ll get into, isn’t up to much so the real joy comes in getting to hear Oscar Isaac’s dulcet tones once more. I was pretty convinced we’d only see Poe in the season’s premiere and finale, so it was nice to see him turn up again so soon, boy, is Oscar Isaac having fun. Poe is a good half year away from the events of the Charles Soule written comic that will lead into The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and shake his foundations to the core.

Seeing a more carefree, but serious when he needs to be Poe here was a nice contrast to the live action Poe.

3. The Thing You Know, But Bigger

As I said, this episode was plot light and guest spot heavy so the actual signal from sector six leading Poe and Kaz to an attacked freighter wasn’t quite as interesting as I’d hoped. Sure, it makes for some light action, but having the freighter be overrun by, of all things, Kowakian monkey-lizards and introducing A Big One as the episode’s main source of external drama was very… kid’s show of Resistance. Again, I’m trying not to come down too hard on the show because we’ve established that Resistance is aiming for a much younger audience than either Clone Wars or Rebels, but… a big monkey-lizard?

You could have had Poe and Kaz go up against a freighter full of pirates, having to sneak through the corridors and make sure they don’t alert the larger group when they take out stragglers and have Kaz start to prove himself to Poe, but… no, we got big monkey-lizards. It’s fine, it’s cool. There’s nothing wrong with big monkey-lizards. I was just hoping for almost anything else.

4. A New Addition

Unsurprising to anyone who was actually paying attention in episode two, Synara, the girl who Kaz and Poe “rescued” from the freighter, was actually Kragan’s co-pilot during his raid on the Colossus during the Triple-Dark storm. I was kind of wondering whether or not the show would withhold that information for a bit, but the episode ended with confirmation that one of Kragan’s crew is now a registered inhabitant of the Colossus and it was all Kaz’s idea. Where the show plans to go from here will be interesting because I’m wondering if Kragan’s crew will begin to become an antagonistic force separate to the First Order in order to not oversaturate the show with stormtroopers. At least, that’s what I would be doing.

5. Droid Drama

I appreciated the show acknowledging that since Poe left BB-8 to watch over Kaz, he would have to fly with a replacement astromech in the form of CB-23. It’s an interesting dynamic as Poe clearly considers BB-8 to be his best friend and number one pal while CB-23 is forming an attachment to Poe that won’t be returned. There’s nothing quite like droid jealously to muddy the waters of the “droids as indentured servants” conversation that people love to have. Not only that, but I loved that this episode featured multiple scenes of two astromech droids speaking with no translation. There’s nothing better.
