Five Thoughts On Star Wars: Resistance‘s “Synara’s Score”

Life is a precious thing on the Colossus and it must be defended on all sides from the raids of pirates and the whims of the First Order. Now, what happens when the defence turrets are down and the ace pilots are away? Well, then we have an episode on our hands.

Let’s dive into “Synara’s Score.”

1. Raiders Of The Lost Colossus

I like the premise of this episode a lot because it allows for an espionage-filled, action-packed episode that really highlights the gossamer thread that is protection on the platform. If last week’s episode took Kaz off the Colossus in order to bring us back with new eyes, this episode served to remind us just how fleeting life is on the platform. With the targeting computer of the platform’s defence turrets down and the aces away, the platform is easy pickings for the pirates.

Good thing there isn’t a pirate spy living on the platform…

2. Orka And Flix Spinoff When

That’s it, that’s the thought. I love these two, they’re my favourite characters in the whole goddamn show. I want an hour of just them every week. Gimme.

3. Synara’s Spotlight

It’s been some, undefined amount of time since Kaz and Yaeger brought Synara to the Colossus in the last episode and, since then, she’s starting to fit in nicely. A little… too nicely. While this episode was fairly obvious fair in having Synara use her connection with Kaz to exploit a weakness in the Colossus, the meat of the episode (at least for me) was seeing Synara become closer with Tam and begin to make connections on the Colossus.

That level of espionage, of having an overtly villainous spy presence on the platform, is a great development for the show, but what really makes it special is seeing the beginnings of the personal connections that will eventually cause Synara to second guess her cause. I can see it coming, you can see it coming. And it’s going to be great when it does.

4. Tam’s Story; A Betrayal In The Making

And, speaking of personal connections with Synara, the best part of that came from the personal story Tam shared with her. Not only was it a nice, emotional moment for the characters (something the show has been light on for characters that aren’t Kaz), but it allowed Tam to be vulnerable for once and open up. And she’s opening up to someone who will readily betray her. There’s a level of pure dramatic irony in having Tam open up to the person who is secretly there to destroy everything around her and not only is that delicious, but knowing that sharing in that vulnerability will eventually call Synara’s loyalty with Kragan into question is perfect. I love this development.

5. Star Wars Without Violence

Nothing has really marked Resistance as “The Star Wars Show For Kids” more than how the raid and, particularly, Kaz and Yaeger’s fight to fit the targeting computer. While The Clone War and Rebels followed the films’s footsteps in having militarised characters getting into frequent blasterfights, this episode was a reminder that this show isn’t that. Kaz barely participates in the fight, mostly getting knocked around slapstick-style by a Trandoshan while Yaeger deals with Kragan. And even then, Yaeger only fires one shot with his blaster and manages to disarm Kragan without, y’know, burning his flesh with the superheated gas of the blaster bolt.

This isn’t, necessarily, a bad thing. Star Wars has always been for kids. What strikes me here is the framing of conflict without much of the same blaster- and physical-based violence that marked other Star Wars media. It’ll be interesting to see how that differentiates Resistance in the big picture from other Star Wars media around it.

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
