Five Thoughts on Star Wars: Resistance‘s “The Engineer”

Hey folks, this is your acting captain covering the latest episode of Star Wars: Resistance. This week, the crew of the Colossus picked up a distress signal from Nena, a computer engineer whose ship has been attacked by the First Order. Kaz and Synara picked her up, and Nena ingratiates herself – especially with Neeku – but she’s wary of the pirates on board…

1. That’s Not Sabine?

I spent the whole episode thinking Nena was voiced by Tiya Sircar, who played Sabine Wren on Star Wars Rebels, because it sounded so much like her. Nope: it’s actually Meghan Falcone, who in real life is married to Neeku’s voice actor Josh Brener. I’m so used to recognizing a voice actor that I was delighted to be proven wrong: bringing back old members of the family is great and all, but so is taking note of new, charismatic voices.

2. Obvious Twist is Obvious

It turns out Nena is a First Order saboteur sent to drain the Colossus‘s power to make way for an ambush from Commander Pyre’s Star Destroyer. The episode is making a point to younger viewers about not being so naive, but it’s still a pretty predictable turn: I suppose the target audience might have suspected the pirates had made a mistake and siphoned too much of the ship’s power, but I didn’t, I like them too much to suspect them of any real wrongdoing by this point. (What is Star Wars if not a tale of space pirates?)

3. Will We See Her Again?

Nena gets a pretty sympathetic backstory about being enslaved as a child, and Neeku becomes very emotionally involved in her, so I imagine we will be seeing her later in the season. Because of her failure to completely incapacitate the Colossus, Agent Tierny vows to execute Nena if they ever cross paths again, indicating later this season Neeku will embark on a rescue mission. Otherwise, well, that’ll be it for this relationship on this show.

4. Sometimes the Hero is Just a Helping Hand

Kaz feels undermined a lot this week, between being forced to take Synara with him to retrieve Nena because she’s a better shot, getting tricked by Nena, and Neeku not believing his discovery that she’s working for the First Order. However, he does get to prove himself in the end by working to restore the ship’s power in engineering (while Neeku takes care of that on the bridge’s end), proving, often, a hero doesn’t need to take charge and bark orders, but someone whose presence facilitates others to do what is needed.

5. Structural Weaknesses

I typically listen rather than watch Resistance, as if it were a radio play, so this was the first time I noticed how peculiar it is the Colossus‘s marketplace is “exposed” to the vacuum of space. I say “exposed” loosely because that area is meant to be protected by a deflector shield, but still, quite the hazard no? One lucky shot from a TIE Fighter and boom – you better hope that shield wall closes fast enough to save all the produce, and anyone not inside.

Alright folks, regular service resumes next week: and remember, the Force will be with you, always.
