Welcome to the finale of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth! Last we left off Gus was reeling from finding out his parents were his biological parents and he’d ran into the woods in distress. Tommy Jeppard and Bear were looking for him but yet to have any real luck. So let’s just see how this first season wraps up and what happens to all of the other characters in this crazy show for the first season finale episode “Big Man.”

1. Abbot and Dr. Singh

After General Abbot takes Dr. Singh and his wife Rani to his camp, he quickly separates them. He knew Dr. Singh was lying about the cure, but wants to ensure that if he wants to be reunited with his wife, Singh better get started on an actual cure. Abbot is evil in his want for a cure because it’s not to help the sick, but instead it’s for him to have the power of who will live and who will die. His lust for power is his driving force, and the cure would make sure nothing would stop him.

Dr. Singh got his wish of obtaining the DNA from hybrids. The only caveat is that he is going to have to extract it himself. The price of his wife’s freedom will be at the cost of going against everything that he believes in. Abbot also keeps her within eyesight of Dr. Singh in a cage in which she cannot see or hear him, so it is both to fuel him and remind him of Abbot’s sick power.

2. Jeppard’s Baby

A big chunk of Jeppard’s mysterious past is revealed in the finale. Jeppard has long shown that he is alone and acted in that way by doing things he is not proud of to see another day. It wasn’t until his friend, Jimmy Jacobs, reveals that at one point he had a pregnant wife, and during the sick, it would only mean that she gave birth to a hybrid child. Jeppard’s decision to panic at the sight of his son would end up costing him both after simply reaching the bottom floor of the hospital; the two were kidnapped.

This decision was always present in his time with Gus and explained why at the moments when he could have left or attempted, he was drawn back to help protect him. He didn’t want to be responsible for the loss of another child, especially when he could have done more. It’s a heartbreaking moment for the audience to realize, but it eases up when he confesses this to Gus and how he won’t make that mistake twice and promises to stick by his side.

3. The Escape

The last time we’d seen Aimee, she was preparing to go out John Wick style and try to take out the army of Last Men at the gates of her zoo. Wendy also took charge and helped the other hybrid children into the sewers to safety. They manage to get through to a church during a firework-induced distraction with the soldiers, but the celebration is short-lived. Aimee’s realization that all her children are now with the soldiers keeps her in war mode. There’s no clue into where she would have taken the children, but it’s showing that no matter who is in her way, she will be reunited back with Wendy and the other children.

In the final moments, we also see a meeting of Gus and the children that is bittersweet because Gus had previously stated how he wished to be around others like him, just probably not in this circumstance. These moments lay the groundwork for the next season and the relationships Gus will build with them, knowing that he isn’t a freak in their eyes.

4. Becky Bear

As Jeppard goes to find Gus in the woods to attempt to bring him back to the house, Bear is back at home with Judy, who is trying to distract her by asking about her past and how she ended up with the name “Bear.” After seeing a stuffed animal, Bear finally breaks down and tells Judy about her parents dying of the sick, her hybrid little sister being kidnapped, and how helpless she felt. Her isolation eventually ended by meeting Tiger and creating a new family.

Since Bear has been with Jeppard and Gus, she’s given half-answers about herself and even less about her supposed plans to find others. The reality was that she had no one else after losing one family to disease and the other by being betrayed by someone she cared about. The pain she carries is what keeps her going and the hope that perhaps one day she will be reunited with her actual little sister. It’s shown to the audience that the identity of her little sister is none other than Wendy, which pushes the envelope more for the audience that it’s a possibility and how close they are to one another.

5. Team Shuffle

A good approach that writers can use is to mix-up the character teams to give an episode fresh look. Wendy and Gus are now in the camps together, Aimee and Jeppard bond by trying to get their kids back from the Last Men, Bear is with this new (still uncertain) character Judy, and of course Abbot and Dr. Singh. The original character pairings storylines were heading towards their semi-happy endings, and so with a post-apocalyptic show like this, it was time to make sure that it wouldn’t happen, at least not so quickly. It leaves the audience on a little cliff-hanger but not a negative one. The audience has seen the growth in every character and now, with this new person, they’ve been paired. It will be interesting how they mesh together to get past the roadblocks in front of them. The Sweet Tooth finale leaves more than enough open-ended storylines for Netflix to (hopefully) continue in a season two.
