Welcome back, Multiversity readers, for my Sweet Tooth coverage as we gear up for the season finale with this penultimate episode. Last we’d seen of our boy Gus and Jepperd was they’d escaped from the preserve and were on their way to Yellowstone with the rest of the kids. Things look positive, but you can never count General Abbot out until we see him lose.
1. Reunion Time
Jepperd, Gus, and the kids are driving back to Yellowstone on the bus and trying to get away as quickly as they can when they run into a blocked path, more than likely by the Last Men. As Jepperd tries to figure out what to do next, the bus is surrounded by Animal Army on motorcycles and a tank. This just felt like a moment where it could have gone a million different ways, but then you’re reminded the key audience is younger viewers, so it can’t get too dark. It turns out it’s one of the Air Lords and Bobby, one of the hybrid kids, in the tank, and they push the car out of the way. It’s a win all around, with Bobby reuniting with his family and Becky finally reuniting with Gus and Jepperd. During their first encounter, Becky scans the bus to see Aimee and the kids and realizes that her long-lost sister Wendy is on the bus too.
2. Birdie’s Tape
One of the most precious things that Becky managed to keep with her was Birdie’s tape she found in the house. Although there was a funny part when she was trying to explain what a tape even was to Gus, despite not knowing the sentiment of keeping something so precious safe was still translated to both Gus and the audience. Jepperd manages to find Pubba’s old walkman at the cabin, and it allows Gus to listen. Most of it is filled with the origin of the disease, but the meat of it, for Gus anyways, was that she was in Alaska looking for a cure and purposely never came back because she wanted to protect Gus. Birdie knew that he would be studied and possibly killed to find more information once it was discovered that he was “born” around the same time as the disease. Her theory wasn’t far off with Dr. Singh’s obsession, but it still hit Gus to his core and lit a fire under him to try and find a way to Alaska.
3. Aimee’s Truth
Thankfully Aimee’s diagnosis in the last episode didn’t wait too long for her to start telling everyone cause then it would have just dragged on and killed the last couple of episodes. She began by telling Jepperd, and although he still had to protect himself from getting it, he still was willing to do whatever she needed to enjoy her little time left on earth. Aimee wants to enjoy the last road trip with the kids and then tell them once they get to the cabin; that way, there is still some fun and enjoyment after the hell they’ve been through because of Abbot and the Last Men. Again it felt like she might have dragged it out, but Aimee finally mustered up her final bit of courage by starting to tell Wendy. It was done in a way that the audience didn’t need to hear as we just saw the shadows of the two as the sun set behind them and the emotion poured out of them. Becky could only watch as she had to swallow the truth about Wendy and gather her remaining strength to keep everyone afloat and feeling protected.
4. Abbot’s Power
During Becky’s trip to Gus’ cabin in Yellowstone, the rest of the Animal Army, led by Tiger, is back in the city trying to take out the remaining Last Men. We don’t get to see much and are only told that they have the zoo surrounded and waiting for him to pop his head out before striking, but if anyone remembers the last episode, he started piecing together Aimee’s plan of distraction. Like in any good horror movie, you can’t confirm anyone’s death until you see their head decapitated or the final kill shot. Right after Becky gives Tiger specific instructions on how to get to the cabin, Abbot and his army strike on the Animal Army. He might not have the numbers he once did. Still, the people he does have left are the most ruthless, including his number two soldier. Tiger manages to get away and warns Becky about him coming, but we’re given a shot of bodies, on both sides, piled up after a brutal battle and Abbot gearing up to find the kids.
5. Right In The Feels
Overall, this episode hit the audience right in the heart rather than the stomach. The “twist” with Abbot was nothing we didn’t expect, but all of the moments between Becky trying to tell Wendy she’s her sister, Gus having to listen to his mother said she would never look for him, and then Aimee giving advice to her kids for what could be the last time. Most penultimate episodes before a season finale provide the audience with a firefight of action or preparing for some closure. For Sweet Tooth, they just decided to try and make you cry before you get ready for a possible big battle or to watch Gus and his crew try to get away from it all.
