Welcome back to Sweet Tooth and the emotional train ride for nearly every character in the show. We’re getting closer to the end of this journey and are seeing what else can possibly get in the way of our heroes. Gus, Tommy Jeppard, and Bear are chasing after the train and getting ready for Colorado.
1. The Cure by Singh & Rani
After nearly being killed by their neighbors, Dr. Singh and his wife Rani are saved by General Abbot, but only so that he can find a book filled with the formulas for keeping the disease at bay. Abbot initially has no use for them and is going to kill them until Rani speaks up about a cure that her husband has found. All they need is a hybrid. It’s a clear bluff for the audience, but Abbot believes her. It’s a tactic that keeps them alive for now, but in reality, it feels like it’s more of a death sentence for her husband. She has the disease that’s plagued the world and without the medicine, she’s going to die from it. Her husband, on the other hand, will be more likely tortured since he’s the one that would be in charge of creating this so-called cure. It’s a bold move to keep them together for some more time, but it’s one that could cost them their lives if they can’t figure it out.
This move also forces Dr. Singh to make the move to test and work on hybrids. This was something that he’d semi-prepared for, mentally, when he was the doctor for the neighborhood, but now he’s going to have to go through with it.
2. The End of the Zoo
Things weren’t looking too hot for Aimee and her daughter Wendy either. The Last Men marked the outer fence of the zoo, so they were coming sooner rather than later. Aimee gets her daughter ready to lead the others through the sewer pipes to safety while she prepares to fall back. She does what any good parent does and lies to her child to keep her thinking everything is going to be okay, even if that means she may not be with her anymore. Her final moments of the episode show her sitting in front of the monitors sitting with a shotgun in her lap waiting for the soldiers to break through.
Aimee has grown stronger throughout the series and has been preparing for this moment since she first ventured out into the apocalyptic world on her own. If her final moments are coming, she is going to go out on her own terms, guns blazing.
3. Jimmy “Fat Man” Jacobs
Gus, Jeppard, and Bear get aboard the train for Colorado and get into a fight with a man working on the train It turns out to be an old teammate of Jeppard’s from his football days. Jimmy “Fat Man” Jacobs quickly stops fighting as soon as he realizes it’s his old friend, and helps him and the kids navigate throughout the train. Jimmy also drops a few hints into Jeppard’s past, bringing up an old flame named Louisa who was pregnant the last time he’d seen her.
Jeppard quickly moves past the question, but the audience is able to notice the pain it causes him. Whenever Jeppard’s past is brought up, he brings up the selfish mentality he once had because it was the only way to survive during those times. With this new bit of information from Jimmy, it could be an explanation for what he needed to do for his family. It’s easy to see the reason why he is so protective of Gus now, and why he was reluctant to help him.
4. Dog
One of the last gifts that Pubba gave Gus before his death was a homemade stuffed animal that Gus would name Dog. Now, Dog hadn’t been seen since the first episode when Gus accidentally set him on fire in frustration of doing housework all alone. It turns out, he was stuffed in Gus’s bag for this whole adventure, but got lost somewhere along jumping on the train. Jeppard’s and Bear initially don’t think too much of it to try and distract Gus, but once it’s revealed that the animal was made out of Pubba’s socks and still has some of his scent, it really hits home for them.
Continued belowGus hasn’t been sad or even cried since the first episode so when the thought of his last connection to his dad was gone, it kills him.
5. GoGro
GoGro is a one of the only clues on where Gus’ mother is in Colorado. Initially, none of them have any idea on where it is specifically until Jimmy overhears them talking. He pulls out his notebook filled with facts he can’t remember on his own, and tells them it is a city outside of Essex City called Goss Grove. Once they jump off the train, they see the gates for Essex and realize how close they really are. It’s been the whole point of the journey, and it looks like it could be coming to an end. It’s still to be decided whether it’s going to be a happy reunion or a sad realization, since Pubba had told Gus the whole time his mom was dead and perhaps for good reason. There’s only two more episodes left in this debut season, so we’ll just have strap in and see if Gus’s mother is alive and if she is going to be happy to see him.
