Hi folks! Welcome back to our weekly recap of The Boys. This week’s episode is the season finale and it’s named “You Found Me”. Ho boy, what a ride it was, a truly amazing piece of super-hero television. Let’s put some music and dive right in!
1. I’ve got this
Well, now we got supes on the army, great job everybody. Turns out that after the reveal that there are super-terrorists, the government is hand-tied and has to find a solution, and that is that the CIA is at the hands of Vought, it doesn’t matter that they are the ones that caused this whole mess to begin with; all their lies doesn’t matter now. Which is eerily similar to the problem with guns in the United States, the gun manufacturers made an excessive amount of weapons, and now, they argue that the only solution to that same problem they created is to sell more guns.
This episode starts with Homelander interrupting a military operation and killing a drug cartel in the middle-east, and the most frightening part is that he is fucking enjoying it! Back in the US, Madelyn is in a meeting with the secretary of state, telling the Secretary of State that their crimes don’t matter at all, what matters is that they are the only ones with the weapon to deal with this. Oh, and she knows everything about The Boys, they are labeled as a treat to the country now.
And at a party, Homelander reveals to her that he made an operation delivering via A-Train Compound V to every terrorist organization in the world, he created the same villains that he is going to fight with, and this shit couldn’t be any less subtle.
2. Annie and her mother
I want to take a slot to talk about the scene of Annie and her mother, it’s discouraging to see that the only good super was created at the will of her mother, in maybe the most severe case of princess-by-proxy imaginable, she was trained to risk her life only for her mother to see her actions reflected on her.
Annie has been a victim of the world from her birth, and nevertheless she is persisting, she is convinced by Hughie that she is a hero, and despite being lied to all her life, she can do something with the powers imposed on her. Her journey is one of the most meaningful of this whole show, her empowerment is admirable, in a world of very little light, she has to illuminate her path all by herself, literally.
3. The rest of the Seven
Black Noir plays the piano.
Queen Maeve show’s starlight the consequence of losing herself to a superior interest, and encourages her to be herself, and don’t turn into the monster that Maeve is, a little bit of redemption you could say.
The Deep celebrates that he is being called back, only to be informed that he is stuck in Sandusky, Ohio. Vought doesn’t care about him and his actions had put him in the sorry place that he is, he has hit rock bottom.
And, finally, A-Train suffers from racial discrimination and takes Compound V to heal his leg, he alienates his brother and want’s vengeance…
4. Deus ex Hughie Starlight
Well, the boys are captured, and Butcher has abandoned them, so this is a job for Hughie! He let’s himself get captured and uses his retainer to save the team; they try to save Kimiko only to be cornered and about to be executed.
At this moment Starlight comes and saves them, but A train is her to get his revenge, if his body allows him. Right before killing Hughie, he suffers a heart attack and Starlight calls 9-1-1, she is not going to look as a betrayer and The Boys can flee.
An important detail is that Hughie and Starlight don’t kiss in their last scene, to me this means that, despite they are working together, their relationship is broken, I mean, they do love each other, but how can they be together after what Hughie hid and then what he revealed? They will probably be together at the end, but not right now, not, when their lives are at stake.
Continued below5. The ugly truth, after sex
At the final showdown between Butcher and Homelander, the great theme is the sex-related secrets hidden to both. Butcher wants vengeance after his wife was raped, but it turns out that, not only was it consensual, she started it. And after Madelyn has sex with Homelander, she accidently reveals that they are still lying to him, so, Homelander discovers that she is scared of him, and all her actions, even having sex with him have the intention of preventing his anger, but he kills her, effectively eliminating his last tie with humanity, he is uncontrollable by anyone now.
Butcher activates the bomb, sacrificing himself, only to wake up after Homelander saved him and both are in a garden, about to be confronted by the truth once hidden to them: Homelander is a father, and the mother is Becca Butcher.
BONUS: WOW! What an incredible season finale, what an incredible first season, it had a ton of social critiques, it might be the perfect show for this era, we are confronted by the demons we ourselves created, a tough but very real theme.
It was an amazing adaptation to the comic, it took elements of the whole run and condensed them in a whole season, I really don’t know what is going to happen next, how are The Boys going to deal with Vought and how the hell is Butcher going to survive, I’m eager to see the next season.
And that’s it for this season, it was one of my favorite shows of the year and I cannot fucking wait to see season two, I hope we don’t have to wait until July to see it.
