The Flash takes a break from DeVoe, and tries to give Iris and Amunet – two sometimes ignored characters – some stuff to do.
1. Sonny Wells
One of my favorite bits about The Flash is how many versions of Wells Tom Cavanaugh gets to play. In this episode, he played five different Wells, including the return of the German/Andy Warhol Wells. But the best Wells was Sonny, a stereotypical Italian greaseball. The show sometimes works in hyperbole and stereotype, and this was no different, but it was so fun. You can tell Cavanaugh just has so much fun doing this. For a show that was rather bleak as of late, it was nice to have a little bit of levity.
2. Amunet Whack Black
I feel like Amunet has been totally wasted this season. I’ll go a step further: now, maybe I haven’t paid attention
this season as much as I should have, but isn’t this the first time we’ve had her powers adequately explained? I feel like I never really understood what she did before tonight, and that’s a problem. Kate Sackoff has been trying so hard to make the character work, and there’s just nothing about it that really works.
3. Caitlin’s struggle
Of all the things Caitlin has done on this show, her missing her powers seems really out of character. I wish there were moments for Caitlin to explain why, exactly, she misses Killer Frost so badly. Just “I was starting to get used to her” isn’t enough.
I mean, Killer Frost really messed up Caitlin’s life, for a lot of reasons. But there are a lot of reasons she mght miss her, if they went into it. Maybe she misses the power. Maybe she misses the ability to let loose without taking responsibility. Maybe she feels inept without a way to help the team. But just say that! Instead of that, we just get this slightly sad Caitlin without a real motivation.
4. Snake eye
What the fuck was that about?
5. Iris’s article
I can’t possibly understand why Iris would want to publish this article. To give up their advantage on DeVoe? To egg him on? To essentially expose herself as part of Team Flash? I cannot understand that whatsoever.
Sure, the idea of informing people is nice, and I’m all for the dissemination of information, but this just seems really short-sighted, doesn’t it? The Flash decided to make Iris into Lois Lane, but that shoe doesn’t really fit here, does it?
I don’t know why I’m so down on this episode. It was fine, for all intents and purposes, but it just felt like there is something off about this episode. For being this late in the season, for being this close to the end, having an entire episode that, essentially, led to them getting a projectile to shoot at the satellites, seems a little silly, doesn’t it?
This season has been so up and down, so unreliable from week to week, that after things ramped up the last month or so, having this episode just felt like a waste.
