Five Thoughts on The Flash’s “Marathon”

Hi folks! Welcome back to our weekly recap of The Flash. This week’s episode is named “Marathon” and focuses mainly on Iris in her quest for the truth about that secret organization she has been looking for. Normally, I would say “Let’s dive right in!” But first, I want to talk about something that has been bugging me from the start of the season and only got worse after the Crisis.

1. My feelings about the direction of the series (written before watching the episode)

So, there it is, the Crisis ended and I loved all the changes we have now, but there’s something wrong, something off. If someone came to me and asked me if they should watch season six, so far I would say ‘absolutely not’. I feel like I wasted two months of my time and the showrunners wasted 9 episodes in what can be easily summed up like this: Barry is sad because he’s vanishing and everybody is coping with that. But that’s meaningless, because last year Ollie made a deal with the Monitor to save Barry and Kara, so, we knew he was going to survive all this time.

To be honest, I really thought he was going to vanish, and the second part of the season was going to be focused on the main cast trying to find a lost Barry while focusing on their own stories. I mean, I know I cannot be angry at the writing team for not developing the story that was ON MY MIND, but I felt like that was the path they were taking, and I feel a little disappointed because they do not dared to lose the main character at least for half a season, even tough they were aiming for that.

Well let’s watch the mid-season premiere and see what they’ve prepared for us.

2. A whole new gallery of villains, starting with Black Hole

After [the] Crisis, everything comes back to normal… kinda. The biggest difference established in this episode is that there are new villains and old villains roaming trough the city, waiting for their chance to kill the Flash.

I was going to make a list of all the recognizable new villains I could find, but I only could identify Dr. Light/Kimiyo Hoshi, and it turns out that she is working for the spiral-y organization Iris is going against! But more on that later.

3. Ollie’s mask, a new mystery?

Well, Ollie is death, and John Diggle comes to Central City to fulfill his testament, in which he leaves his first mask to Barry. He notices a speckle of dust in it and starts to develop a whole theory about how Ollie left a message for him, he forces poor Diggs to travel with him to an island only to find nothing.

I did not like this story, as soon as it began I shouted “it’s gonna be nothing!” and I was right, I feel like it was an unnecessary waste of time, I mean, I get it, they have to fill the episode, but they could put Barry and Diggle in a bar, drinking and reflecting on their late friend, it would have a bigger emotional impact to me.

4. Cisco’s own Crisis

Here’s a weird subplot, if I remember well, Cisco had his powers restored by the Monitor, didn’t he? So then why does he fell so badly about not having his powers during [the] Crisis? I’m guessing that when only the paragons were alive and the world began again he was back to normal, but I feel like the writers forgot that they gave him his powers back!

Well, despite that this was an opportunity for him to make peace with Nash Wells, blamed for the whole Crisis, and to go explore his personal problems on his own, which only means we are having less Cisco Ramone for a while on the show, and I hope it’s only a temporary thing because he is the heart of the show.

5. Iris’ quest for the truth

The main story, and the most interesting to me, was the one of the women from the Citizen hunting for that secret organization with a spiral for a logo, it turns out it’s not DC’s spy organization, instead it’s called Black Hole and they sent Dr. Light to hunt Iris and kill the story… and her!

Continued below

Despite she’s not like the comic villain (or the superhero), I liked what they did with Dr. Light here, using a gun to focus her powers. And I like having a mystery that the press has to solve. And now we have the storyline for the Rebirth comic books, with Joseph Carver (Malcolm in the Middle’s Eric Nenninger!) and Black Hole being the main antagonists for the rest of the season, but he’s only the CEO of McCulloch industries, the founder is his wife, Eva, and as it’s revealed that she will be a new version of the Mirror Master! Is she the leader of Black Hole? What a cliffhanger!

BONUS: The episode started with a remodeled CCJitters being immediately robbed despite being its re-inauguration day, it was hilarious the fact that that poor coffee shop cannot have a good day and also, that regular robbers are morons, who would steal a newly opened shop? After Barry saving the day, we got a whole new Intro for the show and it was pretty good, we needed a new face!

And that’s it for this episode, overall, it was fine, although I didn’t care for Barry’s story, they picked up the loose plots of the season so far and presented us a new villain for our season, I’m really excited to see this new Mirror Master, given that the original of the third season appeared so little.
