Five Thoughts on The Flash‘s “We Are The Flash”

The Flash wraps up its fourth season in a relatively predictable fashion, but did some good character work along the way, and gave a major tease towards season five. Let’s dig in but, beware, spoilers follow.

1. Pregnancy Meta!

We all knew that the season was going to wrap up with Cecile giving birth to her child, but I don’t know why the show decided to make her only a meta when pregnant. It could have been a cool angle if they found out that Jenna, the baby, was a meta, and therefore Cecile was getting her meta powers through the umbilical cord, or something of the like. It wouldn’t be the most convoluted bit of pseudo-science this week, and it would have also set up an interesting status quo for next season and beyond, watching the baby’s powers present themselves.

It would also be a nice echo to the revelation of Caitlin’s meta-abilities 25 years before the particle accelerator. It seems like a pretty fun way to deal with Cecile’s limited meta abilities rather than just having them disappear with her placenta.

2. Projecting consciousness? Is this LOST?

I am under no delusions that this show has any sort of logic to the pseudo-science on this show, but the astral projection ‘solution’ to the problem seems a little out of nowhere. I get that the whole DeVoe ‘thing’ is that he’s always one step ahead, and so they had to be unpredictable.

While that strategy worked well for the Ralph and Barry versus the army of Agent Smiths DeVoes, the astral projection just seemed out of place. Adding Marlize to the team, and being the one to suggest it helped a bit, but it still felt like a bit from a different show finding its way into The Flash.

3. Return of the Ralph

Speaking of Ralph, he’s back! While, again, the means to get him back were a little weird, the desired effect was there, and the clues were there all the time, with DeVoe keeping his body. The second half of this season was so heavy on using Ralph as an object lesson for the rest of Team Flash that this feels a little cheap, but it also somewhat kept the show’s internal logic. So that’s something, right?

4. NuHarry

Every season tends to end with a death/exit of a Wells, and this season was no different. Harry is back from his brain drain, now with a fully functional emotional core, but missing his trademark intellect. Everyone seems far more upset over this than he does, and he instantly decides to return to Earth-2 to spend time with his daughter. What made this Harry unique – the bristling, gruff genius – is gone, and he’s closest now to the original Wells, pre-Eobard Thawne takeover, than any Wells we’ve seen before. I’m sure Harry will return, but I doubt he will be a regular part of the show going forward.

In lesser hands, I’d be worried, but Tom Cavanaugh has played so many alternate Wells that I’m sure it’ll work out fine, whichever Earth they pluck him from.

I’m sort of hoping for Guido Wells, Sonny, to be honest.

5. Nora, Speed daughter

This mystery speedster has shown up many times this season, but tonight we got the first good look at Nora Allen, daughter of Barry and Iris. Not to too my own horn, but toot toot, I called this. This, again, is a very comics-Wally thing to have happen, but is also tied into Bart Allen, aka Impulse, and the long line of Speedsters in DC’s pantheon (check out this week’s “The Flash” for a lot more on this, actually).

Obviously, next season is going to be dealing in time travel, the future, and the effects of Nora’s traveling back 30 years. I’m here for it.

PS – of course they’d name their kid Nora after Barry’s mom. It’s almost too perfect.

See ya in the fall!
