Five Thoughts on Wynonna Earp‘s “Crazy”

There are only three episodes left in Wynonna Earp season four, and perhaps for the show forever, and “Crazy” focuses on the core team that is going to close out the season, giving fine moments to Wynonna, Doc, Waverly, Nicole, and Jeremy.

Like so many episodes, this one has a comedic base overlaid over moments of sheer terror. Purgatory has already surpassed Gotham City as television’s worst place to live. Let’s see what “Crazy” left us with going forward:

1. Haught gets her mojo back.

Since Wynonna Earp season 4 returned, Nicole Haught’s been carrying around a dire secret: she offered to trade Doc to the Clantons in exchange for help in rescuing Waverly from Eden. Doc learned this and had little emotional reaction to the news. This is a burden for Nicole, not him.

Doc and Nicole finally talk it out this episode, with Nicole claiming that she knew Doc would find a way out of the problem and that she would’ve helped him. I think Nicole’s lying to herself a bit but Doc accepts the explanation equitably, almost with a shrug. This forgiveness allows Nicole to regain her mojo, even accepting her “chicken kicker” nervous breakdown when she initially lost the Sheriff’s job.

Sheriff Haught is back. As is parental Nicole, who had a nice talk with Rachel about letting poor invisible Billy free to commit mayhem.

2. Wynonna is dressed for the job.

Let’s face it, Melanie Scrofano has looked amazing in any outfit/costume or lack thereof this season, but in “Crazy,” she finally dressed in her demon killer work uniform, leather pants, full black top, leather jacket, and, of course, Peacemaker.

In the same way as Nicole taking back her Stetson. Wynonna signals she’s ready to deal with the demon-killing responsibilities again. Whatever regret she has for killing Hoyt has been shoved way back at the end of her brain. When the genie responsible for the carnage (Nikki Duval) this episode dubs Wynonna as much a monster as anyone else, Wynonna accepts that role and sends the genie off to wherever dead genies might go.

(Of course, Wynonna might be holding a grudge, as the genie seemed to be egging on her master to eat Wynonna’s brains just before he dropped dead while Wynonna was helpless and voiceless on a slab.)

3. The Glory Hole is a bottomless pit of dirty jokes.

Naming the demon bar the “Glory Hole” was always going to pay off. It does so again this episode as Wynonna arrives to roust Doc about his possible involvement in what seems like vampire murders.

Wynonna’s opening line? “Doc, I need a private investigation with your mustache.” (If you think that’s an unintentional reference to oral sex, you haven’t been watching this show long enough.)

That was followed by this exchange:

Demon minion of Doc: From now on, I suggest you just do not pop into the Glory Hole.”

Wynonna: “Well, isn’t that the point of a glory hole?”

Once again, the show is gloriously filthy. Part of why Earpers love it.  I’m not sure how they top this line but I suspect they will. I have visions of the Wynonna Earp writers engaging in a contest of one-upmanship during meetings.

4. If cons ever come back, the Earper activities are gonna be insane.

Season 4 of Wynonna Earp has featured a chili cook-off, chicken kicking, Halloween celebrations, and now trivia night.

Waverly, Jeremy, and Doc are the three finalists at Trivia Night and the jokes and references flew fast and furious as the trio tried to end the magically-induced game in order to save Wynonna from the genie and her brain-addled master. I had to stop and start the video to pull up these references:

Kristi Yamaguchi, Archangel Gabriel, Dunkaroos, Quaaludes, Arme Hammer, Justin Chris Joey Lance JC (aka Nsync, nice catch, Doc), boron, and Jack Ruby.

There was also the extended discussion about the Dead Man’s Hand, which is commonly known as a pair of Aces and a pair of Eights, the hand supposedly held by Wild Bill Hickok when he was killed. However, the hand may be apocryphal, so Doc’s assertion that this trivia answer was incorrect has a good, sound basis in fact. Alas, his eyewitness testimony was deemed wrong for the purposes of trivia night. Guess we’ll have to see what the right answer is when Earpers run a trivia night.

5.Let’s Talk About “Crazy.”

Jeremy, Wynonna, and Waverly contemplate the murder board in a rare moment of peace.

“Crazy” is one of the most famous songs ever, due to the popularity of the Patsy Cline version. Yet it was written by Willie Nelson, Country Music’s resident out-there artist. The Ken Burns documentary on Country Music features this line about Nelson: “Willie’s not from around here. By that, I mean, not from Earth.”

Crazy could also describe the inhabitants of Purgatory who are trapped in a town of serial killers who trim their numbers with each episode. Last week, it was a pumpkin head come to life. In this episode, it was a hapless sap who was manipulated by a phone-addicted genie. Meanwhile, the fog seeping in from Eden is seeping in at the edges. No wonder the Black Badge Division won’t let anyone back through the borders, save for Jeremy, perhaps.

This is not a good place to live. One hopes if episode 12 is the final episode of this ridiculous, emotional, and incredibly fun show, that the Purgatory denizens get a happy ending too. The ones that are still left alive, that is.
