With summer quickly approaching, pretty much every show worth watching is coming to an end. That makes the summer the perfect time to binge watch what you missed along with some old classics. That’s where the Multiversity Summer TV Binge comes from. One of my personal favorite shows ever is The X-Files, and it is my mission in life to make everyone ever watch it. This summer, I’ll be looking back at season one. In “Deep Throat,” we get the first true mythology episode of the series. As usual, there will be spoilers.

1. Pilot Addendum

“Deep Throat” is the second episode of the series and while it does contain its own plot, it carries over a lot of the bigger, overarching alien stuff from the pilot. The pilot took time to introduce us to Scully, Mulder and what they do but “Deep Throat” throws us right into the more insane side of things. Deep Throat makes his presence known in a huge way to Mulder but as a whole, this acts as an additional bit to the pilot since it deals with a lot of similar things. The X-Files at this point has not become more than aliens but that doesn’t make what’s gained here less valuable.

2. Scully Gets Involved

Scully in the pilot is observant and involved but it’s not until “Deep Throat” that we see her become sort of effected by what she witnesses. Without getting too far ahead of myself, Scully will see some things. What she sees will really change her but in “Deep Throat” we get to see her really kick some ass as a F.B.I. agent. She gets angry, she threatens to shoot some fools and is generally the best. She’s visually take aback by all that she begins to see and ultimately decides that nothing took place. Early on in the show, Scully, despite being open to discussions, does a lot to push back against what she sees. Her frustration despite seeing that Mulder had his head messed with, leads her to still write a report that doesn’t do the situation justice and it adds to her complicated views.

3. The Conspiracy Goes Deep

When Budahas returns home, he’s not the same man. Something has been done to him and Mulder is on to it. What he doesn’t realize is that this goes far deeper than he realizes and ends up having something done to him when he’s caught. This is when The X-Files gets really deep into things. It is only the second episode and we’re already seeing just how involved the military is. Chris Carter is well versed in popular conspiracy theories and this series, especially this episode, embraces all of that. We’ve got UFOs, military officers going missing and bizarre medical treatments. It plays with any paranoia you may already have and that makes for a fun and anxious trip.

4. Very Helpful Stoners

Seth Green (before he was famous) plays a very useful stoner who gives Mulder and Scully some helpful information in this case. The X-Files has plenty of serious drama throughout its 200+ episodes but roles like the one Seth Green plays do a great job at breaking that up. Mulder is a fairly sarcastic guy but he’s also an outsider. When Mulder meets someone like this, it gets played up a bit more and it adds a much needed levity to things.

5. “They Have Been Here For A Long, Long Time”

With this line the reality of how deep this show will take us should set in. Deep Throat has given Mulder the knowledge he wants. Aliens are real, they are here and they been here for a while. This is what Mulder wants and this is what he wants proof of. Deep Throat and Mulder will have a very important relationship over this first season it’s the things that Deep Throat will lead Mulder to that really set the stage for the show going forward. Mulder doesn’t have any of this stuff until Deep Throat leads him to it.

Next week is our first proper “monster of the week” episode as I’ll be looking at “Squeeze.” What did you think of this episode? Let me know in the comments below.
