Five Thoughts on Young Justice‘s “The Hunt”

Only four more episodes of Young Justice left as part of our 2018 Summer TV Binge here at Multiversity Comics. And just in time too as the first two seasons of this show are now on the DC Universe streaming service which has launched. That would have been really helpful a few months ago. Anyway.

This week, Lex Luthor’s Super Friends rescue the Team from the Warworld and things with The Reach start to fall apart. Let’s dive in!

1. Father Box to Warworld

I always forget that Father Boxes are a thing in the DCU. I know we have Mother Boxes, but somehow the idea that Apokaliptins use Father Boxes and New Genesians (??) use Mother Boxes is interesting, and maybe not universally used in the DCU? I have no idea. Either way, I’m cool with everything good in the world being represented by the feminine. Men suck. Anywho.

Both mentions of the Father Box were mentioned in episode 17 of both seasons of this show, and in this episode, it’s Luthor who has a Father Box and gives it to his group of runaways, aka Luthor’s Super Friends. The crux of the episode revolves around Luthor sending them to Warworld to rescue the members of the Team that were defeated by Blue Beetle and who are now being held captive by Black Beetle. Why is Luthor undermining The Reach and The Light it seems? I don’t know, but this is just the beginning of things falling a part for everyone.

2. Dick and M’gann

With Miss M no longer being held prisoner by Black Manta, she’s free to help Dick try to locate the Team. As the only two members not captured, minus Arsenal who is running free on Warworld since he opened the airlock and escaped while Beetle captured everyone, they are trying in vain to rescue the Team. It does lead to a very heartwarming scene though as they both blame each other for the current predicament. Nightwing is mad cause his lying and scheming put an extra amount of people in danger (something he could have possibly avoided by telling Superboy and M’gann) and M’gann feels guilty since she didn’t mind probe Green Beetle hard enough a few episodes ago (since she was afraid she would do what she did to Aqualad to him). They are both right of course, but it’s the most vulnerable both have been for awhile, and M’gann calls Dick by his real name for I think the first time in the show which is something. They’re growing up.

3. Look if G. Gordon don’t like ya…

The Reach Ambassador goes on Godfrey’s show and thinks everything is gonna be hunky dory. He pleased a crowd in New York after showing off Blue Beetle and pitting people against the League. The Reach now (almost) has control of Warworld and is gifting it to Earth as a weapon to ward off other aliens. You’d think Godfrey would eat that stuff up. Except…The Reach lied. Like real bad lied. They got tons of ships and weapons and they lost more than half their fleet defending Warworld, a fleet they told Earth they didn’t have. Godfrey adopted these people as the good aliens, but he is not hesitant to cast them aside. What’s his agenda? I thought he playing The Reach game? Are Godfrey and Luthor on the same team?

4. Luthor you sneaky…

Speaking of Luthor again, turns out sending his Super Friends in was just a ploy to get the key to Warworld. Seriously planetary sized weapon has a freakin car key? Why didn’t Luke and co just steal the key to the Death Star and tralalalala along? I digress.

Deathstroke steals the key, the Runaways rescue the Team, Arsenal releases Mongul and him and Black Beetle start duking it out and everyone gets away. Hooray. I just want to know if Luthor is acting for The Light, since Deathstroke is a Light henchmen, or bishop as Luthor calls him, or is Luthor going rogue. We haven’t seen much of the rest of The Light since The Reach showed up. Vandal Savage was on Rimborr with the League, but Luthor is the only other one with any presence recently. What’s that all about?

5. Arsenal on the outs

So Nightwing kicks Arsenal off the Team, even before they escape Warworld. Probably should’ve waited til you got home bub, seems dangerous to stop to chat when you’re literally on a Moon-sized weapon. But, Nightwing tells Arsenal he’s done since he learns that Arsenal almost killed the Team cause he has some lingering mental health issues for being kidnapped, his arm being cut off, and him being out of the picture for 8 years. Sounds like he needs to go to Sanctuary. Ba dump. Nothing. No laugh? Really?

Arsenal is insufferable and has a ton of trauma. Which is why Nightwing shouldn’t have let him on the Team to begin with in my opinion. But he gets a ride away with the Runaways who reject the offer to join the Team since Nightwing’s only offering because they’ve shown they can be more than STAR Lab guinea pigs. They get away, flip Luthor the bird, and we all wonder now what? Next episode it gets crazy.

That’s it folks, sound off in the comments below, and come back for the last 3 instalmments of our 2018 Summer TV Binge!
