To celebrate our “Evolution of Abe Sapien” art contest, which gives every fan with some ambition and a modicum of artistic talent a chance to have their work published in an issue of “Abe Sapien: Dark and Terrible,” as well as take home a complete set of Hellboy Library Editions, we decided to bring in some ringers, to show us how they interpret everyone’s favorite fish-man. We will be posting pieces each day for this entire month, so come join us for 31 Days of Abe!

Steve Lieber first came to my attention on his “Hawkman” run around the time of ‘Zero Hour,” and has been cranking out consistently nice comics ever since. A proud member of Periscope Studios, in 2010, he worked on “Underground” with Jeff Parker for Image, and more recently, he wrapped up “Alabaster: Wolves” with Caitlin R. Kiernan for Dark Horse. He is currently illustrating another “Alabaster” story for “Dark Horse Presents” (“Alabaster: Box Car Tales”), and teased us by saying he’s working on a new ongoing he can’t talk about yet. Many people (including, hopefully, all of you) picked up his issue of “Hawkeye,” where all the proceeds went to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. You can follow him on Twitter (@steve_lieber), bug him on Faceboook, and check out his website. I’d especially recommend the site, as he has some free comics on there, as well as a great section sharing advice for breaking into the industry. Also, this original piece – the very piece you are looking at – will be available to purchase very shortly at the Periscope Studios Etsy Store.
