Last week, we scoured through the 545 entries in our “20 Years of Hellboy” contest. Brian, David and Dark Horse Editor in Chief Scott Allie have shared their picks, and today it’s time to announce the winners. Before we reveal the winners, please check out all of the pieces here. There is an amazing amount of awesome art in there. Please enjoy it all, and thanks to everyone for entering!

Remember, our winners are picked by none other than Mike Mignola himself – so get ready, here we go!

Our two runners up, who receive the complete set of Reign of the Black Flame Variants are:

    Mark Laszlo

    and Tomas Hijo

And the winner of all six of the Hellboy Library Editions, the “Hellboy: The First 20 Years” Hardcover, and having the piece published in a Mignolaverse title is:

    – Alessandro “Martoz” Martorelli

Congratulations, you guys! We will be emailing you all the details this week!

Thanks to all of you who entered. We hope you enjoy these art-centric months, because we’ve got another one planned, and you won’t have to wait a year to see it. Trust us – it’ll be out of this world.

    Brian Salvatore

Brian Salvatore is an editor, podcaster, reviewer, writer at large, and general task master at Multiversity. When not writing, he can be found playing music, hanging out with his kids, or playing music with his kids. He also has a dog named Lola, a rowboat, and once met Jimmy Carter. Feel free to email him about good beer, the New York Mets, or the best way to make Chicken Parmagiana (add a thin slice of prosciutto under the cheese).

    David Harper

David Harper mainly focuses on original content, interviews, co-hosting our 4 Color News and Brews video podcast, and being half of the Mignolaversity and Valiant (Re)visions team. He runs Multiversity's Twitter and Facebook pages, and personally tweets (rarely) @slicedfriedgold. By day, he works in an ad agency in Anchorage, Alaska, and he loves his wife, traveling and biscuits & gravy (ordered most to least, which is still a lot).

    • Tim Christopher

Congrats guys! Very happy to see Martoz win. Super unique piece and one of my favorites.

    • N Lemon

Congratulations to the winners! So many incredible pieces in this competition, I don’t envy the judges’ job. I really love the more abstract and humorous pieces in particular.

    • Ryan Bolton

First impression on seeing the winner: “what!?!”
I don’t feel like the piece says much for who or what Hellboy as a character or as the comic book is aside from the humorous aspect. I like it but not for much more than Hellboy being in it.

      • Soumya Dham

i agree. there are far more superior pieces in the entry. but then its Mignola’s choice. 🙂

      • N Lemon

I kind of think of it like music. There’s lots of beautiful, technically proficient pieces, and then there are those that take a giant step out of the box in pursuit of expressiveness. It’s different schools of art, with different goals in mind.

        • Perfect response Nikki. And Ryan, I agree, it’s not my favorite piece, but it is Mike’s, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like that it’s different and it’s a very unique interpretation, but my personal favorite was Juan Calle’s piece (although I am a fanboy of his work after these two art contests).

    • Paris Alleyne

I’m just a bit curious. I sent my piece in and it was received but it’s not showing up with all the other entires.

      • Hi Paris, I’ll make sure to check yours. I thought I re-added it, but Picasa is a pain!

    • Jinwu Umemoto

I enjoyed all arts and want to say congrats to winners.
But, I can’t find my own art in Dropbox. Was my entering canceled?

      • Nope! I’ll take a look and see what happened. Thanks!

        • Jinwu Umemoto

Thank you for a sincere reply, David!

    • RtR

There are several pieces in the full gallery I’d have picked over the finalists, which speaks both to the overall quality of the work submitted and to the highly subjective nature of artistic taste. Congrats to the winners! I had fun with mine and appreciate that we got to see all the submissions.

    • Zane Reichert

Excellent work, Though I also did not see my submission in the dropbox, either.

    • Well, it’s not who I thought would steal the prize – I really like your submission, Tim – but that speaks more about what I like and I guess I’m a bit tired of artsy stuff. All in all, it was a great contest and a good month for all of us that love the big red ape. Congrats’ to all of you winners (Tomas Hijo, nice!) and has anyone seen the last episode of Game of Thrones? that alone asks for a celebration!

    • Elvin Ching

Congratulations to the winners! 🙂 And congrats to all who joined too haha.. All your work inspired me! Thanks again for the contest, Multiversity, appreciate all the hard work involved. (But please… no more Picasa lol :p)

    • Josh Deck

Congrats to the winner, & all finalists! I was disappointed not to make anyones list of favourites, but happy to see so many fine selections & entries. Great contest, guys, I look forward to the next one.

    • I have seen all the works, and at the end, I think that Mignola has taken the right choice, congrats to the winners ! 🙂 ( only my opinion )
