Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Hellboy: The Midnight Circus HC ($14.99) – Duncan Fegredo was actually my first “Hellboy” artist, oddly enough. While Mike Mignola is the master, for reasons both obvious and not, do not miss your chance to see new “Hellboy” from Fegredo. The art in this HC is gorgeous from front to back.
Pretty Deadly #1 ($2.99) – DeConnick and Rios are a killer combination. This comic was a hype train from the moment it was announced and it delivers while firing on all cylinders. Do not miss it – this is as “must buy” as must buys get.
Total: $18.49

Hellboy: The Midnight Circus ($14.99) – Spoiler alert: I’ve read this already. Let me tease this book by saying this: the book contains some of the most beautiful pages of any Hellboy story ever. Duncan Fegredo does incredible things with the story, totally changing his art style depending on whether or not the current scene is taking place at the circus or not. The story is classic young Hellboy stuff – heartbreaking, funny, full of foreshadowing and heart. I can’t imagine anything released this week will come even close.
That said…
Velvet #1 or Pretty Deadly #1 ($3.50 each) – Because of the silly confines of our budget, I can’t endorse both of these books (I will allow myself to go 50 cents or so over, but 2 dollars is just too much to break the rules by – I’m a good citizen). Both are from stellar creative teams (Ed Brubaker/Steve Epting and Kelly Sue DeConnick/Emma Rios, respectively), both are pretty great (spoiler alert: I’ve read these, too), and both deserve your dollars. Pick one up this week, and go a little light next week and pick up the other. Or break the $20 limit. Whatever. See if I care.
Total: $18.49

Hellboy: The Midnight Circus ($14.99) – Duncan Fegredo back on Hellboy! And it’s li’l Hellboy at that! And none of this non-canon Itty Bitty stuff either, baby, this is good ol’ part-of-the-mythology storytelling that brings back my personal favorite non-Mignola artist to the Hellboy fold. I am so stoked it’s not even funny. Stop laughing.
Pretty Deadly #1 ($3.50) – So good. So good. If this was Spider-Man 3, James Franco would eat this instead of pie. Don’t miss it.
