Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!
Rachel Rising #20 ($3.99) – If I were a comic book creator, Terry Moore is the kind of talent that I’d love to model myself after. He does nothing but make quality comics, and for most of his career he’s done it all his way.
Shaolin Cowboy #1 ($3.99) – A lot of my fellow CSBC’ers are citing NYCC as a reason to save money this week. I say, isn’t that why credit cards were invented? So you could spend freely and worry about the consequences later? After all – nothing is going to stop me from getting to my shop and picking up the latest Geof Darrow release. Come on!
Resident Alien: Suicide Blonde #2 ($3.99) – Steady as she goes – the 2nd “Resident Alien” miniseries is just as good as the first, which means that it’s nothing but offbeat, quaint, and charming.
Manhattan Projects #15 ($3.50) – And that brings me to what is just about the exact opposite of “quaint.” Here we’re getting another Ryan Browne issue that explores the mind(s?) of Robert Oppenheimer. If quaint isn’t your style, how about offbeat, larger than life, and charming?
Rocket Girl #1 ($3.50) – Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder is a team-up that I dug on their “Halloween Eve” one shot last year. This concept sounds imaginative and delightful. Time-travel, alternate futures, and rocket science; now that’s a recipe for weird fun.
Total: $18.97
Shaolin Cowboy #1 ($3.99) – Not only is it Geof Darrow doing Shaolin Cowboy once again, but it’s Darrow with Dave Stewart coloring him. Even if you’ve never read Shaolin Cowboy before, you should get this for industry best art.
Chew #37 ($2.99) – Tony has a very special meal, Toni reappears, and I’d wager Layman and Guillory are going to try and make us laugh through our tears again. IT’S NOT GOING TO WORK GUYS. IT’S NOT. GOING. TO WORK.
Manhattan Projects #15 ($3.50) – How do you up the insanity of a book like this? Add Ryan Browne art, sprinkle in infinite Oppenheimers, shake, stir, fin. This should be batshit crazy, just the way I like it.
Rocket Girl #1 ($3.50) – This book looks like it should be a lot of fun, and I’m eager to see what Amy Reeder accomplishes with her art when she’s totally unleashed.
Three #1 ($2.99) – Kieron Gillen + Ryan Kelly + Jordie Bellaire = must buy. Seriously you guys, this book is going to be beautiful, and it’s Gillen telling the story a story that he wants to tell. Great storytellers together means great comics.
Avengers Arena #16/Deadpool #18 ($2.99) – I can’t choose between these two great books. Do you want great art from Kev Walker or Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire? A brilliant story from Dennis Hopeless or Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan? Teen drama with a hefty dose of violence or the Merc with a Mouth on a mission to sanity with two big guest stars? Your choice is hard, but you can’t go wrong either way.
Total: $19.96
Shaolin Cowboy #1 ($3.99) — Shaolin Cowboy is the only comic that matters this week. Get it. Enjoy it. Revel in it. Buy multiple copies. Bathe in them. Throw them in an empty pool and roll around as if this water. Plaster your walls with the artwork. Build your own Shaolin Cowboy shrine and kneel before the altar, offering up the latest issue in praise of the Art King Darrow. Go to the top of your office building and shout down to the ants below, “BEHOLD, FOR I HOLD WITHIN MY HANDS THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE SECOND VOLUME OF SHAOLIN COWBOY!” Be aware when the ants raise their heads to listen to you shout, confused at what a raving man is doing atop the building but never the less in awe. Toss down upon them glorious copies of “Shaolin Cowboy” #1, enriching their lives and solidifying your role as their one true savior, the acolyte of Art King Darrow and prophet of our times.

Total: $3.99 — It’s NYCC weekend. Be smart and bring your money to the show.
Abe Sapien #6 ($3.50) – Sebastian Fiumara is back, and our favorite Fish-Man travels to Arizona. Need I say more?
Manhattan Projects #15 ($3.50) – Ryan Browne guest draws another installment inside of Oppenheimer’s brain. Seriously, need I say more?
Total: $7.00 – It’s New York Comic Con week, gotta save!
