Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Christopher’s Picks:

She-Hulk #1 ($3.99) – She’s back! The classic Jennifer Walters, now penned by “Runaways” veteran Rainbow Rowell with art by Roge Antonia. It should be a lot of fun now that Jen’s back to her old self, though I wouldn’t be surprised if the past several difficult years for her didn’t play a role too.

Silk #1 ($3.99) – She’s back too! A big hearty welcome to newcomer writer Emily Kim, as well as returning artist Takeshi Miyazawa, whose dynamic and expressive artwork should help create a dynamic debut.

Devil’s Reign: X-Men #1 ($3.99) – The X-Men understandably don’t connect well to most of the Marvel Universe, so the thought of a series revealing their connections to Daredevil’s nemesis is a really intriguing idea. If nothing else, this should be a great stroll down memory lane for fans of the ’80s X-Men and Daredevil runs.

Total: $11.97

Kate’s Picks:

Catwoman #39 ($3.99): A new writer on the series (Tini Howard) is always a good time to start (or return) to any series.

She-Hulk #1 ($3.99): Before Tatiana Maslany takes on Jennifer Walters later this year on Disney+, get to know She-Hulk as she puts her life back together.

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 1 ($9.99): If last week’s “We Ride Titans” had you wanting more kaiju stories mixed with existential family drama, this week provides in the form of a young man who wants to fight kaiju . . . until he becomes one himself.

Total: $17.97

Mark’s Picks:

Primordial #5 ($3.99) – I’m waiting till the last issue is out next month before I resume reading this. It looks like Andrea Sorrentino will be doing “The Bone Orchard Mythos” for the foreseeable future, so I’m going to take my time with this one and appreciate the details.

The Last Book You’ll Ever Read #5 ($3.99) – Another series where I’m waiting till it’s over before I resume reading. I’m judging purely on the strength of the first two issues and the intriguing premise from Cullen Bunn and Leila Leiz.

The Silver Coin #8 ($3.99) – In a recent interview, Michael Walsh talked cryptically about the structure of this issue, and that alone made it a must-get for me. I want to see how this story’s told.

Total: $19.95 when you factor in that I’m also picking up “Time Before Time” #9 and “A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance” #4.

Johnny’s Picks:

Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines #1 ($3.99) – Just one book on my radar this week, and that’s the return of this beloved (at least by me) Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco book from nearly twenty years ago. It’s World War I with dragons and wizards, which is about as cool a pitch as I can imagine. I’ve been re-reading old issues of Epic Illustrated and Conan lately, and fantasy books are absolutely my jam right now. On the flipside, I haven’t read much from Busiek or Pacheco lately, and I’m curious to see something new from the pair!

Total: $3.99 – I’ll alwo be grabbing that snazzy Fante Bukowski collection from Fantagrapics, but that’s WELL above the cap!
