Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kevin’s Picks:
“Batman” #86 ($3.99) – Welcome to 2020 folks, where the ex-military operative is off “Batman” just in time for the U.S. to go to war with Iran…yikes. Anyway, I like James Tynion IV a whole, whole lot and his “Tec” run was one of my favorite books of the now “last” (it’s up for debate) decade. Casually interested in what’s to come.
“Excalibur” #5 ($3.99) – My favorite Dawn of X books drops another issue and Rogue finally wakes up!
“Strikeforce” #5 ($3.99) – More Tini 2020! Bring on the Tini Howard books!
“Young Justice” #12 ($3.99) – Back in DC land, this issue is promising the answers to some of the questions this book has been asking, as well as Naomi and the Wonder Twins all in one! I love the little Wonder Comics universe Bendis and everyone have created and I’m grateful to see it continue into the new year!
Total: $15.96

Mark’s Picks:
“Bad Machinery – Volume 9: The Case of the Missing Piece” ($12.99) – Man, my “Bad Machinery” is an oddly-shaped set of books. I started buying the large-format books and then Oni Press stopped printing them and switched entirely to pocket editions… At this point I think I’ll have the entire set in three different sizes. Still, as annoying as that is, this is a must-get series. It’s the most John Allisony series John Allison has ever made―no wonder it made David Harper’s list of notable comics for the decade.
“Gideon Falls” #20 ($3.99) – Shockingly, Jeff Lemire and Andrea Serrention’s “Gideon Falls” makes my list again. It’s almost like I really like it or something.
Total: $16.98.

Jason’s Picks:
”Batman” #86 ($3.99)‒ I read a few issues of Tom King’s “Batman” and it honestly wasn’t for me. That said, I look forward to what James Tynion IV brings!
”The Plot” #4 ($3.99)‒ Horror comics have never been my jam, other than Junji Ito’s work. But, that changed with “The Plot”. I love everything about “The Plot” and I expect issue 4 to continue that trend.
Total:$7.98 Honestly it’s a slow week for me. But coming off of debt crippling holidays I am totally okay with that!

Kate’s Picks:
“Doctor Who Thirteenth Doctor Season 2” #1($3.99) – Those of you who watched the season 12 premiere New Year’s Day know that this TV season looks to learn hard into Whovian history and lore, and the comics are no exception. For this second season of the comics, Thirteen looks to be meeting up with her Tenth regeneration in a new take on the 2007 episode “Blink.” As long as it is done in a way that is accessible to new fans and new readers, I am on board with this.
“RV9” #3 ($3.99) – It’s Revenge of the Spies, and with the Italian setting, it’s all the more glamorous.
“Daphne Byrne” #1 ($3.99) – You had me at “writer for The Expanse” in the solicit. You also had me at 19th century New York, filling a somewhat Penny Dreadful and Copper sized hole in my heart. I’ve been more than pleased with the Hill House imprint thus far, and this looks to keep up the momentum.
“Tank Girl Full Color Classics” 1993-1994 ($6.99) – If you read the “Tank Girl” ongoing that just wrapped up its second arc in November, now’s a fun time to look back at her history.

“Batman” #86 ($3.99) – New Year, new “Batman” run. It’s interesting to see how many people were underwhelmed by Tynion’s announcement as the new writer on the book. I have a feeling he’s going to surprise a lot of people.
