Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Kaijumax Season 2 #5 ($3.99) – It feels like it’s been forever since the last issue, but I’m willing to wait for more “Kaijumax”. This issue would seem to have Electrogor reunited with his kids, but if we’ve learned anything so far, it’s that things rarely work out as they’re supposed to. Plus, you’ve got murder subplots and all other kinds of things, so this issue is sure to be the same sort of rollercoaster as the others.
Briggs Land #3 ($3.99) – Brian Wood has finally started to win me over with the story of this book, so that’s a plus. Off the grid, prepper types are fascinating to me, so seeing another comic about them is something I’m always down for.
Warlords of Appalachia #1 ($3.99) – I’m always down for more books set in weird parts of the South and this one set in a somewhat post-apocalyptic South where regions have splintered off from the United States checks a lot of my boxes. Boom usually does well with these high concept books, so I’m hoping this is another solid book from them.
Weavers #6 ($3.99) – The final issue of “Weavers” rolls around. We got a big reveal last issue, so it should be interesting to see how it all plays out in this issue. Spurrier and Burnett have made an enjoyable book so far, so here’s hoping they stick the landing.
Total: $15.97

Matt Garcia’s Picks:
Troll Bridge ($14.99) – Dark Horse has been doing incredibly well with these Neil Gaiman short story adaptations. The esteemed Colleen Duran delivers the art for this one, adding another gem to the Neil Gaiman Library. Hopefully Dark Horse will someday collect these in an affordable and complete omnibus.
Shutter #23 ($3.99) – “Shutter’s” back! I do not see this year going well for Kate and her gang. At least those of whom who are still around….
Total: $18.98

Matt Meylikhov’s Picks:
Reborn #1 ($3.99) – Betting on a Mark Millar book being decent is one of the diciest bets you can do in comics these days, but I’m a glutton for punishment. Greg Capullo is on art, though, and after a colossal run on “Batman,” can you blame me for giving this a shot? Millar seems like the kind of over the top writer who can have a lot of fun with Capullo, and “Jupiter’s Legacy” with Quietly gives me enough faith that if nothing else this should be really visually engaging.
Darth Vader #25 ($5.99) – I’m not a big Star Wars fan, but I really enjoy Gillen’s spin on Darth Vader. Larocca has done a pretty solid job giving the book consistent moody visuals, and I’m pretty amped to see how it all comes crashing down. Could do without the amplified price tag, but, eh. Once in a blue moon that’s okay.
The Flash #8 ($2.99) – I loved Flash as a youngster, but fell off the Speedster wagon in the New 52. Then Rebirth brought in Josh Williamson, and I trust Williamson; turns out he was a safe bet. Carmine Di Giandomenico sweetens the deal with some kinetic artwork.
Wonder Woman #8 ($2.99) – I will always recommend “Wonder Woman,” always and forever. Buy “Wonder Woman.”
Doom Patrol #2 OR Moon Knight #7 ($3.99) – This is hard, and I have a tough time compromising. On the one hand, the first issue of the new “Doom Patrol” was exactly what I wanted; on the other hand, the “Moon Knight” relaunch has been stellar, and having James Stoke drawing Moon Knight in space is inspired. Both of these comics are weird as fun, and that’s what I want from comics. Pick one.

Brian’s Picks:
Tetris: The Games People Play ($19.99) – I am a huge fan of Box Brown’ work, and I am borderline obsessed with Tetris. This is an absolute no brainer for me.
Total: $19.99 – If you’ve got some extra scratch, pick up “The Flash” #8, too.

Deathstroke #4 ($2.99): Slade Wilson is an absolute shitheel of a human being and writer Christopher Priest is the first one in quite a while to acknowledge this. It’s a major part of why this book is so good and compelling. That, plus a plot right out of Metal Gear Solid and rehabilitating the character of Rose Wilson make this one of the surprisingly greats of DC Rebirth and I can feel the black ichor coming up my throat as I type those words.
Gotham Academy: Second Semester #2 ($2.99): Liked the original series? Then you’re going to like this!
Monstress #7 ($3.99): Now, I’m actually reading this wonderful and deep book in trade. This is just the reminder to those reading in singles that Maika Halfwolf and the rest of this great cast are back.
Britannia #2 ($3.99): The first issue did enough to intrigue me, now we just need to see if the rest can follow through.
