Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Kaijumax Season 2 #6 ($3.99) – This is the conclusion to season two. If the last issue of season one is any indication, this is going to be a hell of an issue. We already know Electrogor found his son, but what about his daughter? What about the Ultraman-style heroes currently chasing Electrogor? What about the reference to the Chixculub crater in the solicit text? Lots of questions that need to be answered here.

Invincible #131 ($2.99) – If I’m not mistaken, this is the last issue of Cory Walker’s arc on “Invincible”? Things have been going a bit too well for Mark, or as well as things can go for Mark, given the weirdness that happened in the previous arc and the whole time travel deal. So, now it’s time for Kirkman to do another terrible thing to him and it looks like Thragg’s own version of the Viltrumite Empire is coming to see him.

Black Hammer #5 ($3.99) “Black Hammer” has so far been not even a little of what I expected it to be, but it’s still lived up to and surpassed my expectations for quality. Lemire and Ormston are making a book with a great central mystery, but also populating it with fleshed out characters who actually matter. The way each issue seems also acts as something of a character vignette, even while telling the larger story, has been a nice touch.

Ether #1 ($3.99) – A new Matt Kindt book is always cause for celebration and one with David Rubin art is cause for even more celebration. The idea of a scientist trying to make sense of a fantasy world sounds like a lot of fun and something that Kindt and Rubin are sure to nail.

Total: $14.96

Mark’s Picks:

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #147 ($3.99) — The end of John Arcudi’s run on “B.P.R.D.” This week Mignolaversity is running a bunch of pieces about this. Obviously I’m going to recommend the crap out of this issue.

Dark Horse Presents #28 ($4.99) — This is always worth picking up, but I want to draw your attention to a particular story in this one. You may remember a few years back there was a comic called “The Black Beetle” from Francesco Francavilla. Well, it’s back. Before the big return in “Necrologue” next year, we’re getting a short story first, “Kara Böcek,” set seven years before the last miniseries :No Way Out.”

I also have to recommend Kaare Andrews and Trox Nixey’s “The Black Sinister”. It’s brilliant.

Southern Cross #9 ($3.99) — Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger’s creepy mystery in space continues. I know it seems strange to say it, but this series really feels like an Agatha Christie book to me. But, you know, in space.

Total: $12.97.

Matt’s Picks:

Ether #1 ($3.99) – Matt Kindt and David Rubín on a dimension hopping adventure book? A character who’s one part Haggard West and one part Princess Bubblegum? If this isn’t a great recipe for a new series, then I just don’t know. Dark Horse has been delivering some really terrific original series lately, and this looks like it will continue that trend.

She Wolf Vol. 1 ($9.99) – Trippy but exuberantly illustrated. If you missed Rich Tommaso’s werewolf story in issues, now’s your chance to get on board.

Kaijumax Season 2 #6<$3.99) – Zander Cannon’s second season wraps up here. This has consistently proven to be one of the most imaginative and daring mainstream comics to be released today. You should really be reading this series.

Total: $17.97

Brian’s Picks:

Grand Passion #1 ($3.99) – Dynamite announced this James Robinson project over three years ago at San Diego Comic Con, when the ink was still not dry on his “I quit” note to DC. But the project would pop up now and then in conversation, and here we finally are. I’m a big Robinson fan, so I’ll buy any new series he develops, but this one sounds reasonably different from everything else we’ve seen from Robinson as of late, so I’m quite excited.

Nightwing #9 ($2.99) – Tim Seeley’s grip on the character of Dick Grayson is beyond masterful at this point. Throw Marcio Takara in as a guest artist, and this is a very easy pick up.

Harbinger Renegade #1 ($3.99) – When this title was announced at Valiant Expo earlier this year, it was the book I was most excited about, in part because “Harbinger” under the pen of Joshua Dysart was and is my favorite Valiant book of the relaunch thus far. While Dysart isn’t on this title, I still have confidence that it will be worthy of his book’s legacy.

B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth #147 ($3.99) – If I only had $3.50 to spend this week, this is what I would buy. The end of Johh Arcudi’s run on “B.P.R.D.” is a sad occasion, but he goes out with an incredible issue, and leaves behind a body of work that is staggering. Fare thee well, second cycle of “B.P.R.D.” – we can’t wait until the third cycle.

Total: $14.96

Vince’s Picks:

Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye #2 ($3.99) – To me, this was the dark horse of DC’s ‘Young Animal’ line. “Cave Carson” may not be a well-known character, but he’s at the center of the story with the most heart, so far. It really struck me how clever, funny, and comfy the first issue was. Out of nowhere, it became my favorite book from an incredibly strong line.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt Vol. 1 ($14.99) – I’m a big time Gundam boy. While I haven’t looked at “Thunderbolt” at all yet, I hear it’s pretty brutal. “Brutal” is not a word I would normally associate with the property, so I’m pretty interested in checking it out.

Total: $18.98
