Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Southern Bastards #15 ($3.50) – A lot of us have this book on our list this week and with good reason. It’s been a while since the last issue of “Southern Bastards”, so that just makes this issue that much more of an event. It helps too that it’s kicking off the start of a new arc and looks to be about Roberta Tubb coming to Craw County and looking for answers about what happened to her daddy. Should be another great issue of an already great series.
Eclipse #3 ($3.99) – I’m still kinda waiting on this book to fully deliver on what I’m hoping the book can be, but I’m always down for sci-fi books from Image.
Deadly Class #23 ($3.99) – I just recently got caught up on “Deadly Class” after falling behind for a few months. This is a book that’s truly good each and every issue, which can often be a rare thing in comics. I’m looking forward to what this issue brings.
Motro #1 ($3.99) – Farinas can sometimes be hit or miss for me, but it’s safe to say that he is certainly talented. Checking out “Motro” looks to be something that will be well worth the time and money.
Total: $15.47

Vince’s Picks:
Motor Girl #1 ($3.99) – I almost did a triple take when I saw that Terry Moore had a new comic coming out this week. I should almost make this the only thing I put on this list. If you pick one comic to buy this week, make it this one. And if you’re not familiar with the works of the guy that did “Strangers in Paradise” and “Rachel Rising” then you have some work to do!
Cerebus in Hell #0 ($4.00) – Okay, wait a minute, what’s going on with this week? I have to admit that I have very mixed feelings about Dave Sim’s work for a variety of very well-documented reasons. Still, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in peeking in on this and seeing just what exactly we’re going to be getting from him these days. And, uh, just what kinds of bizarre ideology might be present in it.
Catwoman: Election Night #1 ($4.99) – I’m recommending this for one reason and really one reason only: for some mind-boggling reason, this is where DC Comics decided to put the conclusion of the endlessly brilliant “Prez” revival from their ‘DC You’. Everything else here? Well, let’s just hope they’re doing cool things with Selina again soon.
Shade, The Changing Girl #2 ($3.99) – Speaking of mind-boggling DC Comics things, I still can’t believe this is a comic that DC is publishing in the year 2016. I think I already like it better than the original Shade Vertigo comics. Marley Zarcone’s art. in particular, is just pitch perfect for such a groovy trippy comic.
Total: $16.97

Greg’s Picks:
Champions #2 ($3.99) – Leaning a little heavy on the mainstream this week, but the deep pockets of the Big Two (or the Big One, in this case) pulls in some artistic heavy hitters that I just can’t ignore. From seeing the old “Impulse” team of Waid & Ramos reunite on this book…
Avengers #1 ($4.99) – Or the new no-brainer pairing of Waid and Mike Del Mundo on a (yet another new) Avengers book…
The Unworthy Thor #1 (of 5) ($3.99) – Plus those Mouse dollars getting Olivier Coipel back on Thor with current Asgardian scribe Jason Aaron.
Southern Bastards #15 ($3.50) – But I’m not forgetting the indie books completely. Yet another issue of Southern Bastards refuses to be bumped off the pull list…
Continued belowMotro #1 ($3.99) – And some new (or new to me. Is this older work being republished? I’m not sure…) pages from Ulises Farinas brings the midlevel publishing heat this week.
Total: $20.46. Could have easily broken triple digits if I’d have included the hardcovers I have my eye on, but we’ll keep things within boundaries this week.

Matthew’s Picks:
Cerebus In Hell #0 ($4.00) – Dave Sim is, to me, what is generally referred to as a “problematic fave.” I’m aware of his viewpoints that are antithetical to my own beliefs, but also “Cerebus” is one of those books that I have to separate from the artist (especially all of the text in “Reads”) because his cartooning and the evolution of the book / the dogma of that book’s existence is so fascinating to me and worth exploring and discussing. So with that in mind, I am morbidly fascinated in what he plans to do with this new series; I’m presuming a removal of rhetoric, but you never know.
Motor Girl #1 ($3.99) – A new series by Terry Moore is always something to jump in front of, especially one that’s been gestating for quite some time now (according to Moore this was his original post-“Echo” plan).
Foolkiller #1 ($3.99) – While I find the recent factioning of Deadpool side characters into starring roles an insipid move at best, I have loved what Max Bemis has done in comics so far. Dude gets the fun in it.
Nailbiter #26 ($2.99) – Josh Williamson has been doing great work on “The Flash,” but it’s his work with Mike Henderson in “Nailbiter” that gets me most excited when it arrives on shelves.
Wicked + The Divine #23 ($3.50) – Funny story: when the concept of this issue was announced (interviews with the core cast), I thought to myself, “that sounds oddly familiar.” So I checked — and, from an interview in 2014,
“One of the ideas in play — and, if I say this, don’t hold me to do it — I’m thinking of doing interviews with the gods. Just put on my blog, what questions would you like to ask Lucifer? And I’ll literally write up an interview in the style of universe, and it’ll be an in-universe document. Of course, the cast could lie because that’s what people do in interviews, Matthew. [Laughs]”
Guess I should’ve held him to that!
Total: $18.47 – I still can’t believe Brian has convinced me to do this column again for three weeks in a row after I supposedly quit writing

Brian’s Picks:
DC Super Hero Girls Vol. 2: Hits and Myths ($9.99) – My daughter and I are still getting through the first book of this series, but it has been amazing to see how much she loves these characters. The story is clever and fun, and I’m into anything that gets her reading.
Southern Bastards #15 ($3.50) – Simply put: outside of the Mignolaverse, this is the best creator owned comic being published.
Motro #1 ($3.99) – Ulises Fariñas is a singular talent, and his vision for “Motro” is an inspired one. The book looks gorgeous, and I’m excited to see where Fariñas takes it.
Superman #10 ($2.99) – Tomasi and Gleason return to their original father and son duo, and bring them face to face with their current father and son duo. A backdoor pilot for “Super Sons,” and the book I’m most looking forward to this week.
Toal: $20.47 – I’m a bad little boy.

Mark’s Picks:
Giant Days #20 ($3.99) — Always on my list. But check out Lissa Treiman’s cover!
Southern Bastards ($2.99) — A new arc begins, “Gut Check,” and with Roberta Tubb Craw County, I’m more interested in this series than ever. Hopefully this issue further supports my theory that long-running comics get even better around the fourth arc.
Rise of the Black Flame #3 ($3.99) — I’m liking this miniseries more with each passing issue. Christopher Mitten and Dave Stewart work fantastically well together. I hope this is a partnership that continues on beyond this story.
Continued belowTotal: $10.97. It’s a light week for me.

Matt Garcia’s Picks:
Laid Waste ($14.99) — Julia Gfrörer turns in this disturbing yet wonderfully cartooned post-apocalyptic quasi-horror tale. It’s an interesting thing to see, for sure, but it looks engrossing.
Motro #1 ($3.99) – We ran an exclusive preview of this last week and I gotta say, it’s grabbed my attention.
Total: $18.98.

Ken’s Picks:
Southern Bastards #15 ($3.99): One of the best books Image is doing is finally back!
Faith #5 ($3.99): A light-hearted book with a special story that I’m sure will not piss anyone off whatso…yeah couldn’t finish that sentence.
Total: $6.98
