Comics Should Be Cheap! (12/16/2015)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Invincible #126 ($2.99) – Possibly the only one of Kirkman’s recent titles not to be optioned in some way or another, “Invincible” is still probably my favorite. The recent “Reboot” storyline that sees Mark sent to the past not only continues “Invincible”‘s habit of poking fun at reboots in comics, but also provides for an interesting story arc. I’m definitely in for whatever they have cooking up with this.

Goddamned #2 ($3.50) – Jason Aaron and R. M. Guera making comics together again. This is all the matters.

Exodus: The Life After #2 ($3.99) – Fialkov and Gabo continue to make one of the more interesting comics out there, in my opinion. An exploration of the afterlife, loss, and more, “The Life After” continues to be a great comic, and, most importantly, maybe the only one on stands with Ernest Hemingway as a main character.

Total: $10.48

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Southern Cross #6 ($2.99) – Andy Belanger and Becky Cloonan bring their twisty, trippy, and tense series to its conclusion. I’m looking forward to see how all the parts fit together in the end.

Boom! Box Mixtape 2015 ($9.99) – A collection of stories from the Boom! Box roster of titles, including a “Giant Days” entry actually illustrated by John Allison! These are fun, charming, and the oversized format Boom! prints these in makes for a pretty cool item.

Lucifer #1 ($3.99) – I’ll always have a soft spot for Holly Black for The Spiderwick Chronicles, so her name on this is a definite draw. Also, it’s a Vertigo #1 and those are always worth your attention (if not always your time).

From Under Mountains #3 ($2.99) – Sloane Leong, people. Sloane Leong.

Total: $19.96

Ken’s Picks:

Attack on Titan vol. 17 ($10.99)– Okay, technically this is out today, so go grab it. But this looks like it will be the conclusion to the arc surrounding Eren, Dr. Jaeger, the Reiss Family, and Kenny Ackerman. Looks to be a doozy.

Ivar, Timewalker #12 ($3.99)– Speaking of endings, here comes the last issue of the book that could teach Doctor Who a lesson or two.

Justice League #46 ($3.99)– Darkseid War is great. This feels like the JL book Geoff Johns wanted to write since the beginning. Buy.

Uncanny Inhumans #3 ($3.99)– This book is in my top 5 favorite at Marvel right now. And that preview for this issue definitely made me cock an eyebrow at a power not often seen. Also “Blah Blah Boiling Piss Blah Blah X-Men Blah”

Descender #8 ($2.99)– Yeah, that last page of #7 stabbed you in the heart, huh?

Total: $25.99- Yeah, went a bit over the budget. If anything, take out Timewalker if you’re the majority of the comic reading public or forsake all this and go buy Destiny. Nearing level for “King’s Fall” and I need cannon fodd..umm..comrades.

Keith’s Picks:

We Are Robin #7 ($3.99) – Robin War continues! Last week’s chapters in this epic battle were excellent, including the near-perfect “Grayson” #15. This issue of “We Are Robin” promises a battle to the death between Red Robin and Red Hood along with the Court of Owls’ involvement deepening. This is one of the best Bat-titles in the bunch and writer Lee Bermejo has really surprised me with his fun and insightful writing.

Justice League #46 ($3.99) – Francis Manapul is on art once again for this next chapter of the “Darkseid War” and that’s a good thing. I can’t wait to see what further shocking shenanigans Geoff Johns has up his sleeve for us.

Continued below

Martian Manhunter #7 ($2.99) – This title’s praises must be shouted from every rooftop. Writer Rob Williams and artist Eddy Barrows have made the Martian Manhunter great again. This issue is billed as being the beginning of a new story arc, so new readers should jump aboard!

The Goddamned #2 ($3.50) – This issue has a lot to live up to, what with “The Goddamned” #1 being one of the best first issues of the year. Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera have it in them, goddammit.

Klaus #2 ($3.99) – Tis the season for a Grant Morrison Santa Claus book! The first issue had a surprise ending that I can’t wait to see expanded upon in issue two. Dan Mora’s art was pretty darn amazing too.

Total: $18.46 – When a week has both the Justice League and Santa in it, you know it’s a great one.

Mark’s Pick:

Avatar: The Last Airbender ― Smoke and Shadow (Part 2) ($10.99) ― Each new volume of this series is always going to make my CSBC list. Writer Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru (a pair of artists) capture the feeling from the show fantastically, but what’s more, they build on it, expanding this universe in a way that feels completely true to everything that’s preceded it.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #138: End of Days (Part 4) ($3.50) ― Another automatic item for my list. God, this is getting to be a tense read. Each month the situation deteriorates that much more while the characters try to cling to whatever they can. But I feel like one or more of them are beneath the writer’s guillotine, and waiting for it to drop is a kind of agony. Of course, when it does drop, I’m going to be inconsolable.

Total: $14.49
