Some weeks are big. This week? HUGE. Comic fans from around the world are going to be filling the pain after this week, which makes our job as discerning readers with only $20 to spend even more difficult than usual.

Find out what we’d buy in this huge week of Comics Should Be Cheap! after the jump.

David’s Picks

Age of X: Alpha ($3.99) – I find any X-Event that features the word “Alpha” to be a must buy. Even ignoring that idea, it’s Mike Carey telling the X-Event he wants to tell with a slew of talented artists supporting him and a wonderful high concept ahead of him. Can’t wait to read it.

Fantastic Four #587 ($3.99) – Already have it, already bought it, already loved it. This is a must buy simply because it’s great comic booking. Do not miss this comic folks. Good luck on getting a signed copy, by the way!

New York Five #1 ($2.99) – Let me teach you some basic comic book mathematics. Brian Wood + Ryan Kelly = must buy. It’s that simple, even for someone who never previously read New York Four.

Uncanny X-Force #4 ($3.99) – New father Rick Remender is killing it on this book, and until him and Jerome Opena are no longer working on this book, this will be a monthly must buy for me. Can’t wait to see what happens after the cliffhanger of the previous issue. “Ship…?” Good luck Lil’ Apocalypse!

Fables #101 ($2.99) – This would make my list for just one word: Bufkin. Any time the winged monkey trickster of the once and future Business Office of Fabletown is featured, I am all aboard. This issue features Eric Shanower art too, which is an exciting first for the series.

Total: $17.95

Walt’s Picks

Fantastic Four #587 ($3.99) – It’s finally here. Everything Hickman has done since he started writing on the title has been building up to this issue. I’ve followed him this far. No way am I turning back now. Granted, by the time this column will be published, you probably will have already purchased this, but still.

Detective Comics #873 ($2.99) – I loved Morrison’s crazy Batman epic, but I am more than ready for the series to get back to its roots. Cue Scott Snyder. So far, his Detective Comics has been everything I would want from a Batman comic, and the great artists he has been lucky enough to work with are the icing on an already delicious cake. If the final issue of this arc is as good as the previous two, I think the title will be in good hands from here on out.

Action Comics #897 ($2.99) – I really want to see Paul Cornell writing The Joker. Really, really, really want to. I’m particularly interested, though, in seeing how/if he mentions Joker’s stint as Oberon Sexton. Cornell has been pretty good about being “continuity aware,” so I’m betting that he will incorporate it somehow. Even if he doesn’t, though, this should be as good of a read as his run has been so far.

Age of X: Alpha ($3.99) – I’m very interested in seeing what an X-Men event spearheaded by Mike Carey will look like. If the many teasers are any indication, I won’t be disappointed. The premise seems a bit overdone, but if Mike Carey is involved then I’m sure it will be more than what it seems.

Chaos War #5 ($3.99) – I’m conflicted on this one. On the one hand, I can’t wait to see how Pak and Van Lente finish of this mini that has redefined grand-scale storytelling in comics. On the other, I don’t want their Incredible Hercules saga to end. You have to take the bad with the good, I suppose. Give ’em hell, boys.

Total: $17.95
