Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/27/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Southern Bastards #13 ($3.50) – Because what else am I gonna pick, honestly? “Southern Bastards” is one of my favorite books going right now and one of the rare books that delivers a stellar issue with each one. Even if the release schedule has some gaps here and there, the wait for the book is always worthwhile. This issue finds Coach Boss facing off against Wetumpka in the big homecoming game. Things are about to get even crazier in Craw County.

Chew #54 ($3.50) – Another book that consistently delivers with each issue, “Chew” is so close to wrapping up its stellar run. Though it’s nearly done, the book still has plenty of surprises in store.

Venus #2 ($3.99) – “Venus” was an interesting enough concept and first issue that I’m willing to give this second issue a shot. Plus, Boom! seems to do sci-fi pretty well, so the book also has that on its side.

Negative Space #3 ($3.99) – A book about depression, the corporation that sells it for a profit, and the monsters that feed on it isn’t the easiest concept to sell, but Ryan K Lindsay and Owen Gieni have handled the story well so far. Guy is finally confronting the monsters, and his depression, as this issue continues the story.

Total: $14.98

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Twilight Children #4 ($4.99) – Gilbert Hernandez and Darwyn Cooke bring their intriguing and romantic science fiction story to an end. If you were waiting for it all to be done before diving in, now’s your chance to get on board.

Cry Havoc #1 ($3.99) – Si Spurrier has done both excellent character and world building work over on “The Spire” (also out this week and also worth your time, though it’s six issues in already). Ryan Kelly generally has a strong line and aesthetic. Joining forces to make a family saga wereworlf story, this book already sounds like a win.

Hellboy Winter Special 2016 ($3.99) – Who better to deal with the winter months than the BPRD?

Island #7 ($7.99) – You should be giving this book your attention. And money.

Total: $20.96

Keith’s Picks:

Mind MGMT Volume Six: The Immortals ($19.99) – A quality library would not be complete without the final hardcover collection of writer/artist Matt Kindt’s masterpiece. “Mind MGMT” sadly came to an end this year and the hyperbole is deserved when it’s called one of the best series ever.

Total: $19.99 – A hardcover that stays within budget? Thank you, Dark Horse!
