Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

East of West #9 ($3.50) – Hickman & Dragotta’s tale is really starting to sprout all kinds of different limbs. Going down them one-by-one is making even an only month-long wait between issues agonizing. I can’t stress enough how great this title is.
Five Weapons #6 ($3.50) – The opening 5-issue are was totally lighthearted and fun for a comic about a school for assassins. Jimmie Robinson charmed the hell out of me. I’m glad it’s picking back up.
Revival #17 ($2.99) – It’s “Revival” week, people. You know what that means.
Saga #18 ($2.99) – It means that it’s also “Saga” week. This much Image Comics quality in one week is just unfair.
The Saviors #2 ($2.99) – I’m not sure what the scope of this title is going to be. I definitely didn’t expect it to go down the road it went down in issue #1. I’m just glad we have a James Robinson title with J. Bone art. It’s a pairing I didn’t know I needed before now.
Black Science #3 ($3.50) – And “Black Science” rounds out a stacked week for Image, in a world where pretty soon every week will be stacked in Image’s favor.
Total: $19.47

Serenity – Leaves on the Wind #1 ($3.50) – Most Firefly/Serenity fans like me have been waiting YEARS for the series to get its proper comic book sequel/continuation. This is that comic book. It won’t disappoint.
Five Weapons #6 ($3.50) – It’s back! I don’t know if I’m allowed to use the word breakout comic anymore after yesterday’s article but a certain successful and excellent comic series by the talented Jimmie Robinson has returned and we all need it in our pulls.
Invincible #108 ($2.99) – Uhm. For Invincible fans, this is a big ‘un. That’s all I’ll say.
The Saviors #2 ($2.99) – I’ll note: when I signed up to buy a new creator-owned comic book by James Robinson and J. Bone, I did not expect a sci-fi stoner horror title. I’m not even remotely complaining, though; bring on issue #2, please and thank you.
Thor: God of Thunder #18 ($3.99) – Jason Aaron, Das Pastoras, Young Thor and a Dragon. ‘Nuff said.
Superior Spider-Man #26 ($3.99) – OH SHI–
Total: $20.96 – Oh come on, you can spare the extra dollar

The Saviors #2 ($2.99) – I absolutely adored the debut of this series, and I am really eager to see where it goes from here.
Five Weapons #6 ($3.50) – For a book about a school for assassins, Jimmie Robinson’s Five Weapons sure is a lot of fun. Really looking forward to the return of this book.
Saga #18 ($2.99) – Ho hum. Another amazing issue of Saga.
East of West #9 ($3.50) – 2013 was an amazing debut year for East of West, but I get the idea that 2014 will be even better. This gets things started.
Sledgehammer ’44: The Lightning War #3 ($3.50) – Come for the Laurence Campbell art, stay for the stellar conclusion of another Sledge mini.
Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1 ($3.50) – I’m a sucker for anything Browncoat related, so let’s do this Dark Horse.
Total: $19.98 – Flawless victory

The Saviors #2 ($3.50) – Ain’t nothing about this book that’s not to love. Nuthin’.
East of West #9 ($3.50) – In many ways, this book gets forgotten in my list of truly exceptional work being produced right now because I happen to appreciate the aesthetics of Hickman’s other work a little more. That said, this book is incredible.
Continued belowEarth 2 Annual #2 ($4.99) – I’m still a believer in this book, despite the huge drop off in quality since James Robinson left. I’m giving Tom Taylor a chance to win me over – win me over, Tom!
Sledgehammer ’44: Lightning War #3 ($3.50) – An early contender for the most amazingly illustrated book of the year. You heard me.
Total: $15.49
