Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Extremity #10 ($3.99) – “Extremity” is wrapping up soon, so I’m sad to see it go, but the journey that Thea and her family have been on has been one worth reading. Daniel Warren Johnson is sure to do a lot in these last few issues.

Paper Girls #19 ($2.99) – Admittedly, I didn’t “get” “Paper Girls” at first, but I’ve since started to really enjoy it. BKV and Cliff Chiang are making a modern classic, a story full of great mysteries anchored by a cast of genuinely enjoyable characters and some of the best art out there.

Rock Candy Mountain #7 ($3.99) – I’ve always been oddly fascinated by hobos and the hobo lifestyle, so comic about a hobo fighting the literal Devil is one that I was always going to read. Kyle Starks has made one of the best books of the last year with this comic.

Birthright #29 ($3.99) – “Birthright” is one of those books that is so consistently solid month after month that people just kinda forget how good it is. A lot has happened with Mikey and his family, but things are surely only going to weirder and more dangerous.

Total: $14.96

Kent’s Picks

Giant Days #34 ($3.99) – Start the year of right with one of the best from 2017.

Deathstroke #27 ($3.99) – See above. Add 20% more bastard.

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles #1 ($3.99) – “Prez” and “The Flintstones” are two of the most incisive, insightful and incendiary pieces of comics satire to come along in quite a while. There’s nothing to indicate he’s swinging for anything less than a three-peat with his vision of Snagglepuss as a gay, southern playwright during the McCarthy-era.

Rock Candy Mountain #7 ($3.99) – Kyle Starks’ hobo-opus keeps rattling along towards it’s finish. Might be too late to jump on board this train. But for those who’ve hopped on the rails, it’s been a fantastic ride.

Total: $15.96

Mark’s Pick:

“Nemo” ($19.99)— There’s a few books I wanted to pick this week, but I’m going with Brüno’s “Nemo” because it was something that almost completely escaped my notice until Mike and Greg brought it up in Robots From Tomorrow. I’m not familiar with Brüno’s work, but after a quick google, this book has got me curious. The art alone would be worth checking out, but I’ve also got a soft spot for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

Total: $19.99
