Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
The Flintstones #7 ($3.99) – An asteroid is headed to Earth and people are losing their shit, but the people freaking out are more dangerous than the asteroid is. “The Flintstones” continues to be the best mix of satire and just genuinely good story, somehow wrapped up in a Hanna-Barbera shell. If all the Hanna-Barbera comics were this good, DC would deserve to be top publisher.
Nailbiter #28 ($2.99) – Like so many other long running Image books, “Nailbiter” often gets left behind in the the constant chatter about new comics, but it’s consistently really damn good and really creepy. Always worth a read.
USAvengers #1 ($3.99) – Gonna be real with y’all – I really don’t know what all has went down with Marvel lately and what the status quo for this book is, but it’s apparently got Red Hulk sporting a handlebar mustache and patriotic shorts and two automatic rifles (because an infinitely strong, gamma radiated monster needs guns) and I’m 100% down with the ridiculousness of that. Also, as someone from Alabama, I’m surprised that they somehow gave Alabama Thor as their Avenger, who is a pretty heavy hitter for a not-great state, but it’s Lady Thor so I’m imagining the conservative people who shop at the ten comic shops in Alabama are somehow outraged over it.
Total: $10.97. Also, that “Eden’s Fall” TPB is out, collecting the crossover between “Postal”, “Tithe”, and “Think Tank”. My love for “Postal” just might make me check it out.

Matt’s Picks:
Box Office Poison: Color Comics #1 ($3.99) – From what I’m understanding, Alex Robinson is re-releasing his seminal cartoon series in full color from Pat N. Lewis. IDW is taking over publishing duties (though, of course, they own Top Shelf now, so…). In all fairness, adding color sometimes add a whole new layer to the story (see “RASL”), but then again, it might be arbitrary and kind of weird (“V for Vendetta”). But I say anything that gives interesting books further exposure.
Adventure Time #60 ($3.99) – Shout-out to the fact this comic has been running for five years now, and apart from when the creative teams transitioned over, it’s been consistently solid. Also, Boom! is way better about putting it out than Cartoon Network is at scheduling the show. Anyway, this sounds like it’s one of those “EVERYTHING UP UNTIL THIS POINT MEANS SOMETHING” kind of issues, which could be fun?
King Cat #76 ($5.00) – In November, I had a chance to appear as a guest on a Robots from Tomorrow. Mike spoke at length about this title, and it’s well worth checking out.
Marry Me #1 ($3.99) – Keenspot celebrates the tenth anniversary of Bobby Crosby and Remy Eisu Mokhtar’s webcomic by releasing a print edition. This version features remastered art and original art all in one convenient place.
Total: $16.97

Jess’s Picks:
The Unstoppable Wasp #1 ($3.99) – I’m not a big Marvel reader these days and I have no idea who this new Wasp is. However, “Princeless” is amazing so I’m here for a Jeremy Whitley Marvel book.
The Wicked + The Divine #25 ($3.50) – My favorite series for two years running now so it’s always on my pull. Minerva is a character who’s really starting to come into her own so I’m eager to see what this issue holds for her.
Star Trek: Boldly Go #4 ($3.99) – Before this, I had only read one Star Trek comic book series. I’m hooked on this and can’t wait to see how Spock manages to get free from the Borg.
Continued belowFlintstones #7 ($3.99) – One of the strangest things to happen last year was this book being good and I’m okay with it. Honestly, check it out.
Shade, The Changing Girl #4 ($3.99) – I think the Young Animal imprint line has been really strong so far and “Shade” is the stand out for me. Shade is getting more ingrained into her life as Megan but the madness is still getting to her. I’m eager to see how long she can keep up this new life.
Total: $19.46

Brian’s Picks:
Justice League of America: The Atom Rebirth #1 ($2.99) – I’m very excited to see what Steve Orlando is going to do with his “Justice League of America” series, and the return of Ryan Choi is a reason for celebration. Throw in some Andy MacDonald art, and I’m all in.
Nailbiter #28 ($2.99) – Our time with “Nailbiter” is limited; let’s enjoy it while we can.
US Avengers #1 ($3.99) – I’ll pick up the New Jersey variant, because I’m a sucker for anything with the Garden State on it.
Total: $9.97

Matthew’s Picks:
One-Punch Man v 10 ($9.99) – ONE PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Faith #7 ($3.99) – Your friend and mine Supa Joe Eisma is hopping on the Faith train for a two-issue stint. Should be fun.
Moon Knight #10 ($3.99) – Honestly, I’m pretty surprised this book is at issue #10. 2016 really was the Year of Lemire, huh?
Total: $17.86 – Power! Get power!

Mark’s Picks:
Dragon Ball, Full Color: Freeza Arc – Volume 5 ($19.99) — OK, so I know that purists will say I should be reading this in black and white, but I was introduced to Akira Toriyama’s world through Dragon Ball Z on TV, so the color makes it feel more familiar thanks to the nostalgia factor. Plus, I love this larger sized format. This is my first time reading the manga, and I read in chunks, one arc at a time, so I’m looking forward to sitting down and going through all five volumes of the Freeza Arc. Judging from what I’ve read in the Saiyan Arc, the manga is easily superior to the anime. The fast pace is especially satisfying. I’m looking forward to Freeza’s ‘five minutes’ actually being five minutes.
Total: $19.99.
