Comics Should Be Cheap! (1/8/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Shaolin Cowboy #4 ($3.99) – One of the greatest art clinics I’ve seen in a long time, if nothing else. “Shaolin Cowboy” gets away with indulgences that I wouldn’t allow most other comics on my pull list, but it does it with some of the most detailed, mind-bending zombie art imaginable.

Action Comics #27 ($3.99) – Two issues in and I’m sold on another one of the very few DC Comics’ that I can strongly recommend to everybody right now. Aaron Kuder and Greg Pak have this thing running on some other plane that Warner Bros. isn’t otherwise operating on right now.

Five Ghosts #8 ($2.99) – Image Comics is going to break my bank account. Frank J. Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham are two names to get to know. This swashbuckling book is th reason why. A must-buy.

Manifest Destiny #3 ($2.99) – I gotta give a little bump to this book, which is certainly being under-ordered. Alt-history that isn’t afraid to get a little rough and tumble with its characters – both situationally and character-wise.

Revolutionary War: Alpha #1 ($3.99) – This event is going to be sneaky good, I think. There’s a lot of writer/artist talent on board and we’ll get to spend time with a whole host of characters that have gotten very little to no play in recent years. Who’s with me?

Total: $17.95

Matt’s Picks:

Morning Glories #36 ($3.50) – Uh oh. The Ian issue. Y’all ready for this?

Sex Criminals #4 ($3.50) – The fourth issue of the best new book of last year hits and I can’t wait to see what Fraction and Zdarsky have in store for this issue. Mostly Zdarsky. That Zdarsky guy is making a bit of a splash, I reckon.

Shaolin Cowboy #4 ($3.99) – This is the last issue of Shaolin Cowboy for the second volume, and I can’t wait to see how it will all come crashing down.

All-New X-Factor #1 ($3.99) – I’ll admit: I sort of want Peter David to be working on another franchise by now, as much as I’ve loved his run on X-Factor. When the adventures of Jamie Madrox and his wild bunch ended, I figured it was a good time for David to bring his signature style to a new group of ruffians. But, that said? I won’t not read a book with David’s name on it, and I’m sure this will be a fun new reinvention of the team that David has come to define for over a decade. Lets do this.

Young Avengers #15 ($2.99) – The end 🙁

Total: $17.97 — And, if for some reason you still don’t have this book, pick up the 4th printing variant of Sex Criminals #1. Or just get it because it’s hilarious.

David Harper’s Picks:

Sex Criminals #4 ($3.50) – The best comic everrrrrrr!!!!!!

Black Widow #1 ($3.99) – Nathan Edmondson excels at spy stories, Phil Noto can bring it on art…I’m very intrigued by this book, although I’d GREATLY prefer it as a $2.99 book. Seriously.

Action Comics #27 ($3.99) – I really loved the first issue (I read) of Pak and Kuder’s run on this book, and it was a lot more in line with the Superman that I want to read rather than what we’ve gotten in the New 52. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Fatale #19 ($3.50) – The end of the grunge arc is here, and I’m looking forward to what Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips come up with in what has been the best arc of the book so far.

Continued below

Young Avengers #15 ($2.99) – It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I most certainly do not feel fine. Just really, really sad.

Total: $18.97 – every comic $3.50 or higher?! Come on now comics!

Brian’s Picks:

Avengers World #1 ($3.99) – More Hickman Avengers stuff? Yes, please! Co-writer Nick Spencer is typically a guy I find inconsistent, but he has been killing it on “Superior Foes of Spider-Man” – let’s hope some of that team book mojo works its way over here.

Abe Sapien #9 ($3.50) – We are back in the present day, with Max Fiumara on pencils. The last arc left our Mignolaversity crew a little cold, so here’s to a better arc to kick off the new year.

Minimum Wage #1 ($3.50) – Fingerman bringing his book to a monthly Image schedule is a way bigger deal than people have been making it out to be. This book is unique among Image’s diverse publishing slate – not to mention being absolutely great.

Action Comics #27 ($3.99) – Oh, Pak and Kuder – you boys just get me. This is easily the best any Superman book has been in the New 52.

Black Widow #1 ($3.99) – I am, historically, not a huge Black Widow fan. However, the recent Marvel run of success + the creative team + a shot at making a truly iconic female character = too much to pass up.

Total: $18.97 – I could easily spend $40 this week. Good grief.
