Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Mark’s Picks:

Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #4 ($3.99) – What’s this? I’ve picked that Mike Mignola book I won’t stop raving about? What a surprise! Seriously though, Christopher Golden, Matt Smith, and Chris O’Halloran have done a fantastic job here.

The Sword of Hyperborea #2 ($3.99) – Another completely predictable pick. Rob Williams is a wonderful addition to the Hellboy Universe’s pool of writers, and Laurence Campbell makes everything he works on better. Plus it’s great to explore a corner of this universe we know practically nothing about.

Primordial #6 ($3.99) – The final issue. At this point I’ll pick up anything by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. So I’ve been buying this miniseries mostly blind (I’ve only read the first issue), but I’m looking forward to reading it all this Wednesday.

The Silver Coin #9 ($3.99) – I like that with this series you know what you’re going to get to a certain degree, but at the same time, it can completely surprise you. Artist Matthew Walsh is the element of stability and the guest writer is the agent of chaos.

Time Before Time #10 ($3.99) – What can I say? I like a good time travel story. Plus it’s the end of an arc, so I can’t miss that.

Total: $19.95.

Christopher’s Picks:

G.I. Joe: Saturday Morning Adventures #1 ($3.99) – G.I. Joe’s time at IDW is sadly coming to an end, but at least they’re going to have some fun in the meantime, and what could be more fun than the publisher’s old “Ghostbusters” creative team revisiting the original cartoon universe, and throwing a genie’s lamp into the mix?

X-Men #8 ($3.99) – To be upfront, I find the X-Men’s Krakoa era unsettlingly culty and am just marking time until the characters are mortals living at a school in New York again; but y’know who’s unsettlingly weird and creepy in a good way? MODOK! So yes, I’d definitely read this unexpected battle.

Devil’s Reign: Superior Four #2 ($3.99) – The first issue of Zac Thompson and Davide Tinto’s mad science multiverse crossover tie-in was surprisingly fun; more please!

Total: $11.97

Kate’s Picks:

Marvel’s Voices Legacy #1 ($5.99): It’s Black History Month, and with a writing debut by Natacha Bustos and a 50th anniversary celebration of Luke Cage, this should not pass you by. Marvel is doing a decent job with these anthologies that offer something for all levels of readers (though I wish they would come up with some more descriptive names since it’s becoming an issue when indexing my comics).

I’m Looking for Serious Love ($12.99): It’s your typical opposites attract romance story (country boy has meet-cute with city boy) but I’m in the mood for love, and the world still continues to be a dumpster fire, so this is some good comfort food manga.

Total: $18.98
