Comics Should Be Cheap (2/3/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Chris’s Picks:

“Beast Wars: Transformers” #1 ($5.99) – “Beast! Wars!” Cue sick guitar theme: Beast Wars was my introduction to ‘Transformers’ as a kid, but IDW’s never really known what to do with this part of the saga. Enough time’s passed now (25 years, fact fans) that they feel comfortable just doing a faithful reboot now, and I can’t wait to read it.

“Avatar: The Next Shadow” #2 ($3.99) – The opening chapter of Dark Horse’s follow-up to the second biggest movie of all time felt surprisingly subdued, but I doubt a lack of action will be present this time, as the tension between the Na’vi and their former white savior ratchets up…

“Specter Inspectors” #1 ($4.99) – Been thinking a lot lately about how I’d love a Scooby-Doo comic as good as the late ’90s DTV movies, or Mystery Incorporated, one that adults can enjoy as much as kids: hopefully BOOM!’s latest fantasy YA adventure will scratch that itch.

Total: $14.99 – honorable shout out to “Overwatch: Tracer – London Calling” #3 (which I’ve already enjoyed for free on Dark Horse Digital), and Sam Maggs and Kendra Wells’s “Tell No Tales: Pirates of the Southern Seas” (which is what I would’ve listed last week.)

Vince’s Picks:

Luna #1 ($3.99) – Maria Llovet’s art is tremendous, and the concept of an occult 1960s sex-and-drug-fueled period piece sounds good as hell, to me.

Star Wars: High Republic Adventures #1 ($3.99) – The High Republic stuff has been high quality across the board. Far more exciting than the sequel trilogy turned out to be, and somehow more fun and hopeful even as it’s placed back in the distant past on the “Star Wars” timeline with lots of tragedy yet to come. I suspect the youth-oriented IDW offshoot, like most of these are, will be high quality too.

Total: $7.98

Kate’s Picks:

Future State Harley Quinn #2 ($3.99) – This was my favorite of the Future State titles – – can the second issue keep up the good momentum from the debut? One way to find out . . .

Luna #1 ($3.99) – I love the psychedelic look of this book, which fits in well with the supernatural themes. Let’s see how well the two play together.

Specter Inspectors #1 ($4.99) – To balance out the adult themes of “Luna,” there’s this title, a fun modern take on Scooby-Doo. Also check out that Erica Henderson variant cover!

Total: $12.97. If you have some spare change from the couch cushions, there’s a lot of Image Firsts out this week that are only a dollar. Great way to try out a new to you series.

Johnny’s Picks:

Colonel Weird Cosmagog TP ($19.99) – Just one pick this week, but hopefully a doozy. Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Tyler Crook weave an intricate and intimate time-travel story starring Black Hammer’s own Colonel Weird. Among the many things that make this story special, or perhaps the thing I appreciated most, was Lemire’s ability to tease out the personal mystery at the crux of Colonel Weird’s time-lost dilemma, echoing how our own memories can betray or fail us, and our understanding of the world. Lemire excels at making the extraordinary seem both familiar and profound, and Crook’s expressive art that blurs the line between cartoonish and realistic perfectly matches the tone of the work. Another stellar entry in the Black Hammer-verse.

Total: $19.99
