Comics Should Be Cheap! (2/2/11)

I’m not going to lie – this is one of the lightest weeks in terms of recent comic history. There isn’t a lot out there that is really blowing us away, but there are a lot of nice books that still makes it difficult to keep our budget below $20. I do have to say, if it weren’t for one monthly release this week, I would have been all over that Daytripper trade paperback. If you haven’t picked up that series yet, do not miss it!

Find out what our writers pick after the jump in this week’s Comics Should Be Cheap.

David’s Picks

Invincible #77 ($2.99) – No matter the quality of the rest of the books this week, this book makes any week a great one. Especially considering that Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley are throwing down a showdown between Team Viltrum and Team Rest of the Galaxy for the sake of Earth. It’s going to be a hell of a thing, and I really can’t wait.

Hellboy: The Sleeping and the Dead #2 ($3.50) – I’ve already read this issue. I’ve got a review coming up for it later. Realistically, all you need to see is the first name in the title and the first creator on the title to know this is going to be good. It’s science…Hellboy + Mignola = genius.

Witchfinder: Lost and Gone Forever #1 ($2.99) – Another book from Mignola, and another one I’ve read that will be having a review coming out soon from yours truly. It’s a fine book, and one that builds on the last excellent Witchfinder mini. I’ve quickly realized that anything Mignola does is great, but when combined with co-writer John Arcudi? Even better.

Secret Six #30 ($2.99) – While I’m less than pleased to find out this book is going to require me picking up Doom Patrol to understand, I can’t resist it. I enjoy the Six too much. Here’s hoping DC stops tying them into other series – I hate being forced to pick up other books to enjoy my Six fix.

Deadpool and Cable #26 ($3.99) – Any other week, I wouldn’t touch this with a ten foot pole. This week though? I’m feeling like taking a risk. The plot of this sounds too rife with potential to entertain to pass up.

Total: $16.46

Brandon’s Picks

Daken: Dark Wolverine #5 ($2.99) – I have been really digging this book. No matter what my qualms with Daniel Way’s work on Wolverine: Origins were, and there were a few, this book is really good. I am really looking forward to Daken’s attempt to take over Madripoor. I am sure this will be a lot of fun.

Invincible #77 ($2.99) – Really what do I need to say? If you don’t know by now it’s a lot cause. Buy it!

Superboy #4 ($2.99) – Loved the first issue, wasn’t wowed by issue 2, and then found myself again loving issue 3. I am very interested to see how this issue shakes out.

Sweet Tooth #18 ($2.99) – Love this book and you better believe I will eye gobble this book as soon as I get home from my LCS. After last issue we get a nice stand alone before we get back into things so if you are looking for a jumping on point start here!

Time Masters: Vanishing Point #6 ($3.99) – Booster Gold is in this book. Burpee is buying it. Other than that check out the book that I am convinced will have a tie to FlashPoint. I could be wrong but I could also be right so check it out and we will find out together!

Total: $15.95

Walt’s Picks

Uncle Scrooge #400 ($3.99) – I am reasonably sure that I will be the only one selecting this issue, but that’s alright. Sure, it contains some reprinted pages, but I would bet that 99.9% of our readership don’t own the original issue(s). Boom! is the reigning king of all-ages material, and this issue deserves to be purchased just as much as any of DC or Marvel’s centennial issues.

Continued below

The Walking Dead Weekly #5 ($2.99) – As I said last month, this is just a placeholder for Walking Dead would be were I not buying it in trade I always felt bad seeing it on everybody’s list but mine. Yeah, I’m a bit of a follower. What of it?

Amazing Spider-Man #653 ($3.99) – Big Time has been one of the best things to happen to Spider-Man in a while. Slott loves the character and the universe he inhabits, and it shows on every page in every issue. This particular arc has been even more of a treat for me, as it has been illustrated by Stefano Caselli, one of my favorite artists. I’m interested to see how this arc wraps up, and where Slott takes us from here.

Invincible Iron Man #500.1 ($2.99) – The latest Invincible Iron Man is the first of Marvel’s Point One initiative (unless I missed something), and has a lot to live up to if it hopes to match issue #500 in terms of quality. I have faith in Fraction, though. Any attempt to make comics easier for new readers to jump in will usually get my thumbs up, so lets see if this issue sets a good precedent for the rest of the Point One books to follow.

Ultimate Comics: Thor #4 ($3.99) – Well, I’ve read every issue so far. Hickman’s Thor mini isn’t necessarily the best thing on the shelves, but it is still a very fun and exciting read. The lowest on Hickman’s totem pole of quality is still way better than the average superhero comic, and I would definitely recommend this mini to fans of either Thor or the Ultimate Universe.

Total: $17.95
