Comics Should Be Cheap! (2/24/2016)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:

Postal #10 ($3.99) – Hill and Goodhart continue to make one of the most underrated current comics with “Postal”. It’s an engrossing story, smart writing, and great art. This books deserves so much more attention.

The Goddamned #3 ($3.99) – I think it’s only like a month late, but this issue feels much later. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or bad thing. Even so, Aaron and Guera teaming up again on a creator-owned book is worth keeping up with regardless.

Chew #55 ($3.50) – The last issue in the penultimate arc! “Chew” is so close to being over. It’s a weird thing after having this book around for the last five years or so. If the last few arcs have been any indication, we’re really in for something crazy with the upcoming final arc of this book. I know I’m definitely ready.

Venus #3 ($3.99) – It’s kinda like The Martian, but on Venus and with more people and that’s something I’ve liked reading so far. Boom! usually does pretty solid scifi.

Total: $15.47

Matt Garcia’s Picks:

Octopus Pie Vol. 1 ($14.99) – Image picks up Meredith Gran’s long-running-but-soon-to-wrap webcomic for a brand new print edition. A New Adult series about a group of people in Brooklyn, figuring out their life (and failing), the series is funny, emotional, and sometimes heartbreaking. Let’s hope that these Image collections preserves the original black and white linework rather than relying on that green toning we saw in the Taptastic editions.

Kaijumax Vol. 1 ($9.99) – Zander Cannon’s monster island prison drama gets collected. Cannon straddles a lot of elements in this series, but he maintains a fine balance in tone, even when the story gets crazy dark. He embraces the goofy, but still isn’t afraid of poking at any sort of emotional reality. Also, the designs alone make it worth checking out.

Total: $24.98. It’s two trades, though, so more comic for your buck.

Keith’s Picks:

Kill Your Boyfriend/Vinamarama Deluxe Edition ($21.99) – These two Grant Morrison-written stories are collected in one deluxe hardcover volume. Being a Morrison fanatic, I’m ashamed to say I’ve never read these stories and look forward to finally immersing myself in them.

Total: $21.99 – Taking a chance on Grant Morrison seems pretty safe to me.
