Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:
America Chavez: Made in the USA #1 ($3.99): America Chavez is BACK, and I’m glad to see her on my pull list once more.
ENIAC #1 ($3.99): The first of the Bad Idea titles is here, and I do love any story about the early days of computers. (Still waiting on my Halt and Catch Fire comic…) But has it been worth the wait?
Diary Of An 8-Bit Warrior Graphic Novel: An Op Alliance ($8.99): Kids like Minecraft? Get them to put the screens down and pick up a book about their favorite video game, the first in a series.
Total: $16.97

Christopher’s Picks:
America Chavez: Made in America #1 ($3.99) – I’m not familiar with America Chavez outside her “Young Avengers” and “Ultimates” appearances, so I think this’ll be a nice chance to get to know the character better before her movie debut.
King in Black: Captain America #1 ($4.99) – I’m thoroughly nonplussed about ‘King in Black,’ but I’m always interested in seeing how a new writer imagines the thoughts and feelings of the Star-Spangled Man with a Plan (in this case Danny Lore), so best of luck to them.
Avatar: The Last Shadow #3 ($3.99) – Last time set up a potential murder mystery on Pandora, so that’ll be fun…
Transformers: Beast Wars #2 ($3.99) – Loved the first issue; fingers crossed for some gorilla vs. T. rex action this month.
Total: $16.96

Johnny’s Picks:
America Chavez Made in the USA #1 ($3.99) – The first of a couple Marvel minis I’ve got waiting for me at my LCS this week, this one stars one of my favorite new(ish) Marvel characters, America Chavez. Still mostly sidelined because Marvel seems to invest more comic real estate for “properties” that already exist in the expanded media spaces of TV/Film, here’s hoping America can gain some traction in the coming years – and maybe this is the mini to help her along? Really dug the preview art by Carlos Gomez, and guest star Kate Bishop is always a welcome presence in my funnybooks.
Demon Days X-Men #1 ($3.99) – One of the most in-demand cover artists in recent memory, Peach Momoko, takes her art to interiors this week with her re-imagining of the X-men (and the Marvel universe at large) with “Demon Days.” Inspired by Japanese folklore and showcasing some gorgeous watercolors and delicate-yet-dynamic line art, I have no doubt X-fans will be pleased with this miniseries. A current “Stormbreaker” in Marvel’s talent pool, Momoko is heading for superstardom, starting here. Calling it now.
Total: $7.98 – I’m also going to sell an organ and grab the “X of Swords” Hardcover, because I’m an X-simp.

Brian’s Picks:
Eniac #1 ($3.99) – What Bad Idea is doing has no guarantee to be successful, though I have no doubt that the crew over there has it in them to be incredibly successful. But the gamble is going to be a show in and of itself, even when leaving out the top notch creators and interesting books that are coming out of this. That said, this book looks amazing, and is a no-brainer to pick up.
Infinite Frontier #0 ($5.99) – DC often uses one-shots like this to course-correct and give the next couple of years a roadmap. This does that in spades, setting a few things right, and giving readers a ton to be excited about going forward.
Star Wars: The High Republic #3 ($3.99) – This is the most exciting Star Wars status quo in print since…ever? While this is the lesser of the ‘Hight Republic’ series, it is the one I am expecting to get really interesting and important sooner than later.

Mark’s Pick:
Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #1 ($3.99) – Chris and Laura Samnee’s comic is one of my most anticipated for 2021. The preview pages for this look amazing. This is the kind of content I’ve been craving from Chris Samnee.
Total: $3.99. I’m also picking up Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook, which isn’t a comic, so it doesn’t technically break the $20 budget.
