Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
We Can Never Go Home #1 ($3.99) – Black Mask Studios is quickly becoming the indie publisher that could as it’s been doing big things since it started back in 2013. Part of that is its big new lineup of books, which is starting to roll out now. “We Can Never Go Home” is one of the books that caught my attention the most, a teenage runaway romance with superpowers. If the first issue is any indication, Black Mask may just have a hit on their hands and this book is going to be something special.
Pastaways #1 ($3.99) – I doubt I’ll be the only one to include this on my list, but it’s an easy choice. Matt Kindt teaming up with Scott Kolins for a comic involving time-travel and a team that hates each other is definitely something I’m way okay with.
D4VE #2 ($3.99) – The best digital comic of last year continues its print run with the second issue and I’m still super excited. I can only hope that Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon are getting filthy rich off “D4VE” like they deserve to.
Goners #6 ($2.99) – One of my favorite recent Image books wraps up the first arc of its story and it looks to be a good one. “Goners” has consistently showed a lot of heart in the characters, while building an interesting world with lots of history. I can only hope the team will get to tell many more stories set in the “Goners” universe.
Total: $14.96

Matt Garcia’s Picks:
Pastaways #1 ($3.99) – I didn’t read the solicit beyond “dinosaurs” and “giant robots” before I was sold.
All-New Ghost Rider #12 ($3.99) – Seriously. Never thought I’d recommend a “Ghost Rider” book so hard. This is the conclusion to Felipe Smith’s run and I hope that Robbie Reyes doesn’t get thrown into the back catalogue of Marvel peeps.<
Gotham Academy #6 ($2.99) – Mysteries revealed! Answers received! More cliffhangers to desperately cling to!
Adventure Time #38 ($3.99) – The Land of Ooo is falling into starvation because everyone forgot how to cook. Well, Jake can make sandwiches, so that’s something, right? I wonder how that will play out. Hastings and Sterling are still finding their footing on the ongoing series, but their confidence and approach to the material keeps getting stronger.
Chew #47 ($2.99) – Oh, man, guys. Do you realize that “Chew” is on its downward slope? It’s time to get caught up, I think. Get down with the crazy.
Total: $17.95

David’s Picks:
The Wicked + The Divine #9 ($3.50) – This book quietly has taken a serious leap with its second arc, going from a great book to one that might be the best thing that Gillen and McKelvie have done yet. Looking forward to what’s next from this truly stellar book.
The Valiant #4 ($3.99) – The best superhero book on the market right now by a country mile comes to an end this week. Plus, the last time we get Paolo Rivera art for an unknown span of time. Drink it in, folks.
PastAways #1 ($3.99) – I’m not really sure what this book is about, but Matt Kindt and Scott Kolins is a heck of a team and it looks like a lot of fun. That’s enough for me.
The Walking Dead #139 and Chew #47 ($5.98) – Why did I pair these together? Well, almost every book anyone will list this week are likely going to be books in single digits for issue counts. It’s the nature of the industry today. All of my other books are, after all. But these two are well into their runs and on creative highs right now. Don’t forget about the book that have been great for a long time, just because there’s a lot of new hotness out there.

Keith’s Picks:
Roche Limit Vol. 1 ($9.99) – This is a great series that is both fun and thought-provoking. More people need to read this so they can jump into the second volume of the planned trilogy when its first issue is released in May. Michael Moreci will quickly become one of your favorite writers. And Vic Malhotra’s art is gorgeous in this first volume.
The Multiversity: Ultra Comics #1 ($4.99) – Grant Morrison’s epic mega-miniseries has gone by too quickly. With this issue taking place in our “real world” (Earth-33), it’s bound to be a trippy (as well as spooky) experience. As an added treat, we get a “Final Crisis” reunion with Doug Mahnke on art.
Wytches #5 ($2.99) – Every issue of “Wytches” has haunted my dreams. I have no reason to believe that the perfect team of Scott Snyder, Jock, and Matt Hollingsworth will let up now with their fifth issue.
Pastaways #1 ($3.99) – “Pastaways” #1 is one of the best first issues I’ve read so far this year. It’s vastly different from Matt Kindt’s masterful “Mind MGMT” yet is extremely promising and populated with a team of time-traveling characters that I look forward to getting more acquainted with. Scott Kolins’ art is the artist on the book and he seems perfectly suited for this story.
Total: $21.96 – This is a big week for comics and I could have easily gone way over the limit than I already did.
