Comics Should Be Cheap! (3/28/2012)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget.

Follow the cut to see everyone’s picks for the week, and feel free to share your own list in the comments!

Walt’s Picks:

The Unwritten #35.5 ($2.99) – “The Unwritten” #35 was my favorite issues of 2012 so far. You bet I’m buying the next one.

American Vampire #25 ($2.99) – ‘Death Race,’ the latest “American Vampire” arc, is a bit more ridiculous than the stories preceding it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t as good. Scott Snyder is telling an exciting story, but the real star is Rafael Albuquerque, who is putting out some of the best work I have ever seen from him. This issue marks the story’s conclusion, and I, for one, am excited to see how everything ties back into the overarching series.

FF #16 ($2.99) – I’m not sure where Hickman can take Marvel’s first family after the mind-blowing “Fantastic Four” #603, but I’m certainly not going to stop reading either of his books because of that.

…seriously, though, what can he do after all of that?

Daredevil #10 ($2.99) – I knew something was missing from my life. It has been almost a month and a half since the last issue of “Daredevil,” but somehow I’ve managed to soldier on. With the great handle that Mark Waid has on this series, though, and the excellent art of Paolo Rivera, I can guarantee it was worth the wait.

Moon Knight #11 ($3.99) – There are very few books that are worth $3.99. I pay for them anyway, but I secretly hate it. “Moon Knight” isn’t one of those. Sure, it’s decompressed as all get out, but it’s some of the best work we have seen from Brian Michael Bendis in a while, and illustrated by the always brilliant Alex Maleev. I’ll pay $3.99 for that.

New Deadwardians #1 ($2.99) – Okay, I have to say that the basic premise of this series sounds really stupid. Like, really. Still, it’s a new series from Vertigo, and it’s written by the critically-acclaimed Dan Abnett, so I suppose it’s at least worth a shot… right?

Total: $18.94

Brian’s Pick:

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth: The Pickens County Horror #1 ($3.50) — B.P.R.D. — Brian’s Pocket Running (Out of) Dollars — gimme gimme gimme.

The Flash #7 ($2.99) — I’ve gushed about this book a whole lot, and it has deserved it. Francis Manupal has been on top of his game, and is leaving all rumors about his lateness in the dust.

I, Vampire #7 and Justice League Dark #7 ($2.99 each) — “I, Vampire” is, simply put, one of the best comics being published today, and this month it crosses over with “Justice League Dark,” simply put, one of the comics being published today. “Dark” has potential, and with Jeff Lemire coming over soon, it looks to be improving, but right now, this crossover is just about the only thing keeping me reading until Lemire takes over.

New Deadwardians #1 ($2.99) — Yet another Vertigo book that I wasn’t enamored with in the 2012 preview, but I thought was interesting enough to buy the first issue. I thought I was done with vampires pre-“I, Vampire,” but who knows, maybe this will be the second blood-sucker book that will hook me.

Total: $15.46 — Use the extra money to get some mints — people don’t carry enough mints.

Matt’s Picks:

BPRD: Hell on Earth – Pickens County Horror #1 ($3.50) – The next series in BPRD’s “Year of Monsters”, this two issue mini is written by Scott Allie with Mignola, features art by Jason Latour with colors by Dave Stewart and has a cover by Becky Cloonan. Say no more, I’m sold!

Scalped #57 ($2.99) – This book has taken quite a turn for it’s final arc, but I’m incredibly anxious to see how it all wraps up.

Morning Glories #17 ($2.99) – If I had to describe this issue of the arc as something, it would be the equivalent of #10, the Jade issue. That’s all I’ll say on the subject for now.

Ghost Rider #9/Daken #23 ($2.99 each) – Two books by Rob Williams ending today, both of which I have been enjoying quite a bit. You may be a stranger to both, but each finale promises something different that should pay-off quite well.

Moon Knight #11 ($3.99) – The penultimate issue of Moon Knight by Bendis and Maleev. Not excited for the series to be over, but as excited as ever to see how it all wraps up.

Total: $19.45

Gil’s Picks:

Aquaman #7 ($2.99) — This is Johns’ best series. Who’d have thought Aquaman would be among DC’s best books?

Daredevil #10 ($2.99) — Marvel’s best solo book.

Flash #7 ($2.99) — Even if it weren’t a very Flash-esque story, which it has been, Manapul’s art is nerdgasmic. Yes that’s a word.

Morning Glories #17 ($2.99) — If you’re not reading this book, and are wondering why we all recommend it, you must be new to MC. I hope you’re new at least.

Superman #7 ($2.99) — Superman is taking on Helspont. Why WOULDN’T I be jazzed. It seems pretty obvious that Superman and his Kryptonian cohorts are the Wildstorm Universe’s entry point to the DCU.

Uncanny X-Force ($3.99) — Not the biggest fan of the art, but I love X-Force and the Captain Britain Corps.

Total: $18.94
