Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Descender #1 ($2.99) – Jeff Lemire is one of my favorite creators, so I’m always pretty into whatever books he announces, creator-owned books especially. Unlike most of his stories, Lemire is teaming up with another artist to make the book and he’s managed to partner with a fantastic one in Dustin Nguyen. I have very high hopes for what the two can do together with “Descender.
Rat Queens #9 ($3.50) – I, like a lot of readers, really like “Rat Queens”. While the earlier controversy with Upchurch was a huge bummer, it’s great to see the book finally back on stands. We could all use a bit of bawdy fun in comic form.
Feathers #3 ($3.99) – Jorge Corona is quietly making one of the most charming books on stands, in my opinion. It’s been a slow build so far, but I’m confident it’ll all be well worth it in the end and this will a very solid all-ages book.
Total: $10.48. It’s a light week for me, but nothing else is a “must buy” for me.

Keith’s Picks:
Nameless #2 ($2.99) – The first issue of this miniseries by Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham, and Nathan Fairbairn bowled me over with its story, art, and promise of even more frightening things to come. 2015, like 2014, is going to be the year of Morrison.
Descender #1 ($2.99) – Having already read this book, I can say that it is a definite must-purchase. Jeff Lemire brings a sense of wonder and heart to a book that is reminiscent of his “Sweet Tooth”. Dustin Nguyen, after this first issue, will gain even more popularity (deservedly so) and even more recognition for his distinct and breathtaking art.
Swamp Thing #40 ($3.99) – Since the dawning of the New 52, “Swamp Thing” has remained a consistently high-quality book. Charles Soule had some big shoes to fill after Scott Snyder left the title and he did not fail to impress. This issue is the final, oversized finale to Soule’s run and the final issue of the series itself. Although I’m sad to see it go, I hope DC has room for ol’ Swampy in a corner of the DC Universe.
Grayson #8 ($2.99) – Although I’ll miss every one of the DC titles that are on my pull when “Convergence” sidelines the ongoing books next month, I am going to especially miss the sexiest (and one of the best) characters in comics.
Batman Eternal #48 ($2.99) – Only five issues left! This sounds like it’s going to be the one where the villainous mastermind will be unveiled and wreak his most horrifying havoc on the Caped Crusader and Gotham City. As a Batman fanatic, it’s been nice having a weekly devoted to my favorite hero.
All New Hawkeye #1 ($3.99) – Marvel Comics and their characters have never held any interest for me, yet Jeff Lemire is one of the few writers who I will give a chance because a book has his name on it. I have no knowledge of Hawkeye’s background, so here’s to hoping its new-reader-friendly and a fun read. At least the art by Ramon Perez is guaranteed to be pretty darn impressive.
Total: $19.94

Matt Garcia’s Picks:
Princess Leia #1 ($3.99) – This hasn’t even started yet and I’m already disappointed that it’s not more than a miniseries. Long live Leia.
Grayson #8 ($2.99) – I don’t know how many more ways to talk about this book; suffice to say, I’m always happy when it comes out.
Nameless #2 ($2.99) – Grant Morrison’s current workload all revolves around miniseries and shorts, and I think knowing there’s an endpoint in mind makes it feel like these have some sense of direction, even as they continually spiral into crazy. Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn, though, prove they’re more than adept at keeping up.
Continued belowSaga #26 ($2.99) – Everyone shut up. There’s a new issue of “Saga” out.
Feathers #3 ($3.99) – The slow pace, the wonderful visuals, the intriguing premise, the interesting characters, and the fantastic setting. This is a book I’ve been enjoying immensely.
Total: $16.95

Vince’s Picks:
Nameless #2 ($2.99) – This is an Image Comics kind of week. Sometimes it’s so hard to put together a CSBC entry, because there’s just too much out there you could recommend. I’m making it easy on myself this week by sticking with Image. Grant Morrison & Chris Burnham’s first issue of “Nameless” didn’t disappoint. It’s all the mystery and occult weirdness that you would hope for from the duo. If Morrison’s “post-capes” (say it ain’t so) is more “Nameless” and less “Happy!” (which was certainly fine, but unspectacular) – I’ll be eternally grateful.
Revival #28 ($2.99) – A mainstay of my pull list. The best thing Mike Norton and Tim Seeley have ever done – and that’s saying a lot!
Saga #26 ($2.99) – This CSBC entry brought to you by “Come on – it’s “Saga”!”
Supreme: Blue Rose #7 ($2.99) – I regret that this will be the final issue of the finest comic miniseries that I never knew I would be head-over-heels for. I can’t wait to see which top-notch creator will next take on a Rob Liefeld property and re-invent it into something better than it should ever be.
Princess Leia #1 ($3.99) – Okay, so my one non-Image entry is going to be the latest entry into the new Marvel “Star Wars” line. “Star Wars” and “Darth Vader” have scratched a tremendous itch for me, thus far, and I’ve been surprised at how tightly the stories weave into one another. It’s about time we got a good Leia story, and with Terry Dodson on art, you know it’s going to look good.
Total: $15.95

David’s Picks
Bone Color Edition Volume One Out from Boneville Tribute Edition ($14.99) – This is definitely the winner of longest title of the week, but it’s also the winner of the best. A new version of the first volume of Jeff Smith’s all-time classic series with new work from people like Raina Telgemeier, Kazu Kibuishi, Kate Beaton, Craig Thompson and more? Oh my.
Descender #1 ($2.99) – Two big debuts from Jeff Lemire this week, and I’m picking the new sci-fi story from him and artist Dustin Nguyen. It’s a good one. Definitely check it out.
Total: $17.98 – a “small” week but an amazing one
