Comics Should Be Cheap! (4/16/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Curse #4 ($3.99) – This has been a fun, creepy little book. Also, I hear that I die in this issue, or something? I’m scared to find out.

Amazing X-Men #6 ($3.99) – There are a lot of great artists out there. We’re living in an age of absolutely ridiculous riches when it comes to great art in comics and I like to think that we recognize that all the time here at Multiversity Comics. So don’t let that fact dull my point when I tell you that Cameron Stewart is one of my very favorite artists in comics. Top 5. I’m very excited to see him on an X-Men title that I’ve been enjoying very much.

Solar, Man of the Atom #1 ($3.99) – I like Frank J. Barbiere’s work and I like what Dynamite has been doing with their recent Gold Key titles. They’re really different from the pulp books that Dynamite has become known for and, for my money, they’ve been much better.

Frankenstein Alive, Alive #3 ($3.99) – No ifs ands or buts, you need to be picking this up if you’re a fan of great comic art. Bernie Wrightson is an absolute legend and is doing transcendent work on this book, no matter how infrequently it hits shelves.

Wonder Woman #30 ($2.99) – Every month we get closer to the end of this magical run. I dread this horrible day.

Total: $18.95

David Harper’s Picks:

Amazing X-Men #6 ($3.99) – With this Cameron Stewart illustrated issue, Jason Aaron’s run on the X-Books comes to an end. Cue the Sarah McLachlan. Cue the tears.

B.P.R.D. #118 ($3.50) – If you’re a fan of amazing action/fight scenes from one of the best artists in comics, this comic might be for you.

Ms. Marvel #3 ($2.99) – This comic is so fun. I can’t wait to continue the adventure with Kamala Khan.

Thor: God of Thunder #21 ($3.99) – Jason Aaron may have left the X-Books, but his work on Thor continues on. So does Esad Ribic’s. Thus, I continue to purchase this book.

American Vampire: Second Cycle #2 ($2.99) – The first issue of this book’s return was an awesome return-to-form for it. Here’s hoping Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque keeps that party going.

Total: $17.46 – pretty small week with some pretty notable release

Brian’s Picks:

B.P.R.D. #118 ($3.50) – The best monthly book in comics keeps getting better and better. This issue has one of my favorite sequences in any comic ever. Really.

Sinestro #1 ($2.99) – Cullen Bunn is a great writer who has had limited success with company-owned properties. With the great Dale Eaglesham on board, I can’t imagine this book falling into that category. Between this and Magneto, Bunn is becoming the anti-hero master.

Solar Man of the Atom #1 ($3.99) – The Gold Key relaunch has been Valiant-esque in its solid execution – add Frank Barbiere into the mix, and it looks to continue that way.

Wolverine and the X-Men #3 ($3.99) – At ECCC, writer Jason Latour told me the difference between his run on this book and Jason Aaron’s is that Aaron’s is from the perspective of being someone’s father; Latour’s is from the perspective of being someone’s son. That description was the missing glyph that unlocked the book’s charms to me. I’m now hooked. Plus, Mahmud Asrar is a beast.

Ultimate FF #1 ($3.99) – Josh Fialkov #1s get bought. It’s just how I roll.

Total: $18.46

Matt’s Picks:

Morning Glories #38 ($3.50) – I may say this every time there is a new issue, but man, this is a big ‘un. And, not for nothing, but I am particularly proud of this month’s Morning Glory Babies. You’ll see why when you get to it.

Stray Bullets: Killers #2 ($3.50) – Oh man, the first issue of the new Stray Bullets was MARVELOUS. YES YES YES! MORE MORE MORE!

Curse #4 ($3.99) – The finale to Daniel/Moreci/Lorimer/Rossmo’s little werewolf epic. Some nasty stuff takes place in this issue. Some fan-favorite characters get some cool scenes.

Superior Spider-Man #31 ($5.99) – WELCOME BACK, PETER.

Skinned #1 ($0.99) – If you happen to have a penny less than a dollar available to you, this book I lettered is available on Comixology this week. I think my bio in the back is worth the price of admission, but I’ll let you be the judge.

Total: $17.97

Zach’s Picks:

Batman #30 ($3.99) – We’ve finally made it to the main attraction: Mad Max Batman in I Am Legend Gotham. Let’s do this.

Wonder Woman #30 ($2.99) – Buy good book because it’s good.

Sinestro #1 ($2.99) – This one could go either way, but having one of comic’s greatest villains drawn by one it’s greatest artists is hard to pass on.

Superior Spider-Man #31 ($5.99) – I can’t believe Dan Slott is getting rid of Spidey-Ock! Who cares about Peter Parker?! It’s like the past year of comics never happened! I’m an outraged fan and I’m dropping this book and breaking my iPad in half and my childhood is over!

It’s the end of an era, folks.

Ultimate FF #1 ($3.99) – Ok, this book looks insane. I kind of hate the costume design, but the team concept and roster seem top notch. Plus, I have a lot of faith and Fialkov to make bold choices work. But seriously, those colors.

Total: $19.95
