Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Feel free to share your own list in the comments!
Walt’s Picks:
Moon Knight #12 ($3.99) – A $3.99, 20-page book seems against the spirit of this column, but… well, come on. It’s Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Say what you will about Bendis’s other comics, but his work with Maleev is almost always excellent. This book has been one of the best ones I’ve seen from Bendis in a while, and I will lament it’s passing. This Bud’s for you, you crazy vigilante, you.
American Vampire #26 ($2.99) – Lots and lots of things were turned on their head in the final pages of “American Vampire” 25, but before we can figure out exactly what’s going on, it’s time for the usual Albuquerque-less interlude story. Luckily, the story centers on Calvin Pool, one of my favorite supporting characters, and features Roger Cruz on art. I’m not exactly sure who Cruz is, but the solicit promises me he’s excellent, and solicits never lie!
Daredevil #11 ($2.99) – The Omega Effect reaches its conclusion! Do I, or anyone else, need to hype up this series any more? I didn’t think so.
New Deadwardians #2 ($2.99) – The first issue of Dan Abnett’s new creator-owned series was pretty interesting, but as neat as the story was, I was particularly entranced by Ian Culbard’s unique, New Yorker-esque artistic style. The first issue was definitely worth at least checking out, and I’m willing to bet you enjoyed the first one as much as I did, then this one will also be worth a look.
Rebel Blood #2 ($3.50) – Another zombie book? Well, yes, but trust me: this is fantastic. Riley Rossmo is putting out some terrific art – like always – and is churning out a unique zombie tale with the help of Alex Link. If you like zombies in general, you will definitely want this, but even if you’re a bit skeptical of the fad – like I am – you will still probably want to pick this up.
FF #17 ($2.99) – I thought I was going to drop both this and “Fantastic Four” now that Hickman has finished his epic and is essentially treading water until the big creator shakeup. Then I read the latest issue of “Fantastic Four” and shed a single, manly tear. I take it back.
Total: $19.45
Matt’s Picks:
Rebel Blood #2 ($3.50) – Riley Rossmo is doing some magic over in this book. It comes absolutely highly recommended for anyone who has ever been bored by some of the stagnation inherent in a completely overpopulated gene.
FF #17 ($2.99) – Pete and Johnny getting into whacky roommate hijinks, illustrated by Nick Dragotta? Yeah, I can buy that.
Li’l Depressed Boy #10 ($2.99) – Chidlish Gambino drops by to deliver some real talk. If you liked Campfire or you like comics about little depressed boy being given some real talk, this one is for you.
The Twelve #12 ($2.99) – I almost honestly put this on my list here begrudgingly because ugh, it’s a bit hard to care. At the same time, though, when I read “The Twelve” #1, I adored it. This book really had the chance to be something special, but time and JMS’ politics/commentary have killed it for me. That said, I’ll read the last issue, and I would imagine so will a lot of you.
Continued belowMoon Knight #12 ($3.99) – The only title from Marvel’s Big Shots line to not make it past issue #12. It’s sad, but if Bendis and Maleev of all people can’t keep the poor crazy bastard going in his own book, perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be.
Spaceman #6 ($2.99) – The only DC title I’m recommending, and it’s not really DC! Azzarello and Russo make a hell of a team, and this is one hell of a comic. It’d be a shame to miss it on some foolish “wait for trade” scheme since its a mini. It just reads so damn well in individual issues.
