Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.
That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Leo’s Picks:
Colossi #1 ($3.99) – Vault Comics has had some solid debuts so far with their first wave of books and this one looks to continue the trend. Ricardo Mo and Alberto Muriel give us a book about tiny travelers stranded in a giant other world, complete with some additional scifi weirdness. Definitely a book to check out.
Rock Candy Mountain #1 ($3.99) – If I had been born in a time and place where being a wandering bum was more socially acceptable, I’m pretty certain I’d be a hobo. There’s something fascinating to me about the early 20th century hobo culture, not to mention the freedom the lifestyle represents. Seeing Kyle Starks promise a book about a hobo searching for the mythical Rock Candy Mountain, complete with tons of hobo fights, sounds like something right up my alley.
Extremity #2 ($3.99) – Daniel Warren Johnson absolutely killed the first issue of “Extremity” and explored some pretty deep things, as we discussed in our interview. You definitely want to be reading this. If somehow you were dumb and didn’t pick up the first issue last month, they’ve got a reprint of that for you, too.
Flintstones #10 ($3.99) – I know I beat the drum for “The Flintstones” each month, but it’s just so damn good. This current little arc about an incompetent, warmongering leader in Bedrock is hitting a little too close to home.
Black Cloud #1 ($3.99) – On one hand, I’m against anything that causes Jason Latour to devote less time to drawing “Southern Bastards”, but on the other he’s co-writing a book with Ivan Brandon, with art by Greg Hinkle, about a woman from a world of dreams. Hard to be mad about that.
Total: $19.95

Mark’s picks:
Brave Chef Brianna #2 ($3.99) — I remember hearing about this book a while back, but it fell off my radar by the time #1 came out. So, while technically I guess I’m recommending #2, truth is, I’m really going to check out #1. The concept of Brianna trying to prove herself by setting up a restaurant in a city full of monsters amuses me. Plus, I’ve got a weak spot for cooking stories. Hopefully I enjoy this one.
Giant Days #25 ($4.99) — Obviously this is on my list, but this time it should be even more obvious than usual since this is a double-length issue kicking off Year Three.
Invader Zim #18 ($3.99) — The Invader Zim TV series really liked certain animals: pigs monkeys, bees… And the bees particularly amused me. Maybe it’s because one downed Zim’s Voot Runner, or maybe I’m just amused by the way Richard Steven Horvitz screamed the word.
Either way, this issue has bees in it. You have been warned.
Baltimore: The Red Kingdom #3 ($3.99) — This is the last miniseries of “Baltimore,” so it’s a must-get for me.
Paper Girls #13 ($2.99) — Another auto-recommendation from me. This series has just gotten better and better with each issue, though I’m only up to #10. I love to read this series in chunks, so I’ll catch up when the arc is done.
Total: $20.95.

Matthew’s Picks:
The Amory Wars III Good Apollo #1 ($3.99) – Somewhere the 18 year old me is freaking out that this is being done. The 30 year old me is just fine with it, but curious. And, not for nothing, but Rags Morales on art seems like a pretty good deal to me. Feel like it’s worth the look, basically.
Faith #10 ($3.99) – Joe Eisma is back on “Faith” and they’re doing their first event arc where all Faith’s villains band together to team-up against Faith. I’m looking forward to this one.
Continued belowThe Flintstones #10 ($3.99) – Everyone’s saying it. “The Flintstones” is the most hype book of the year. Three more issues, including this one. Don’t miss out.
Rock Candy Mountain #1 ($3.99) – I love Kyle Starks’ work. “Kill Them All” and “Sexcastle” are brilliant, and I have a short but sweet cameo in “Ricky Thunder”. At this point I’ll follow him to the ends of the comics Earth, as long as he’s writing and drawing.
Royals #1 ($3.99) – I gave an honest shot to “Inhumans Prime” and “X-Men Prime”, and I feel like now’s a good time to stop reading the X-Men and go back to reading the Inhumans. Al Ewing is wowing me in “US Avengers” and “The Ultimates”; I expect nothing different here.
Total: $19.95

Brian’s Picks:
Eleanor and the Egret #1 ($3.99) – I reviewed this a few weeks ago, and it has been sticking with me ever since. It’s a weird book that reads completely straight, a surrealistic tale woven in a very plaintive way. Plus, it’s Sam Kieth – we don’t deserve this. But we get it anyway – cherish it.
Superman #20 ($2.99) – This is the first bit of the new Super status quo, and I’m fascinated to see how it shakes out.
The Sovereigns #0 ($1.00) – These Dynamite debuts that are a buck or less are great values, and while they haven’t always delivered, it’s always worth a shot. With the talent involved here, it’s wroth the gamble.
Black Cloud #1 ($3.99) – Jason Latour, Ivan Brandon, and Greg Hinkle – three fascinating creators are different points in their careers. Ben reviewed this a few weeks ago, and he got me even more hyped than I was before.
Rock Candy Mountain #1 ($3.99) – Kyle Starks! Kyle Starks! Kyle Stark! Kyle Starks!
X-Men Gold #1 ($3.99) – I haven’t bought an X-Men comic in a long time, but the mixture of nostalgia and a Kitty Pride-led team has me checking this out.
