Comics Should Be Cheap! (4/9/2014)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Vince’s Picks:

Batman Eternal #1 ($2.99) – Alright, let’s do this. I’m super into weekly comics and the Batman corner of the DCU has been one of the few things to write home about lately. No reason to think this won’t be decent. I hope I’m right about that.

Deadman Wonderland Vol. 2 ($9.99) – Wonderfully weird and visually unsettling at times, “Deadman Wonderland” is bringing me back to a love affair with manga & anime lately.

Flash Gordon #1 ($3.99) – I love both the underrated work of Jeff Parker and the art of Doc Shaner, which we’ve featured here on Multiversity Comics through the years in our ‘Art of the Week’ column. Nice to see them both land on a property that I’m interested in.

Total: $16.97

David Harper’s Picks:

Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #1 ($3.99) – The only answer to the question “what’s the one book you should be buying this week?”

Flash Gordon #1 ($3.99) – You know, honestly, I’m not that into Flash Gordon as a concept, but a book with Doc Shaner and Jordie Bellaire as the art team guarantees my purchase.

All-New Ultimates #1 ($3.99) – Michel Fiffe writing a young Ultimates book with Amilcar Pinna drawing it? Be still my beating heart!

All-New Doop #1 ($3.99) – While I’m wary of picking up this book for $3.99 and of the idea of having to translate an entire comic to read it, I love David LaFuente’s art and the prospect of Peter Milligan going X-Statix again is too alluring to resist.

East of West #11 ($3.50) – One of the best comics being released today. I’d tell you to buy it, but I don’t feel like I need to.

Total: $19.46 – when the cheapest book you buy in a week is $3.50, that’s how you earn a frown out of me

Matt’s Picks:

Shutter #1 ($3.50) – Joe Keatinge and Leila Del Duca come together to do a modern day Tintin, and dammit if you do not get along with this book then I don’t think we should be friends.

Lumberjanes #1 ($3.99) – I’m already disappointed this is ending at issue #8.

Iron Fist the Living Weapon #1 ($3.99) – Arguably the most exciting book of the week, or even perhaps the month. My excitement for Kaare Andrews’ doing an Iron Fist book all by his lonesome is almost too palpable at this point.

All-New Ultimates #1 ($3.99) – Michel Fiffe’s first non-“Copra” comic, and look, we’ll all have a chance to buy it! Isn’t that great, being able to buy a comic. If only another comic could make itself more readily available, am I right?

All-New Ghost Rider #2 ($3.99) – Tradd killed it on the first issue, and I’m beyond excited to see what he can do now that the Rider is actually — well, the Rider.

Total: $19.46 – How about them price points, eh?

Brian’s Picks:

Flash Gordon #1 ($3.99) – It is rare that a creative team is so perfectly fit to its assignment, but that is the case here. Jeff Parker + Evan “Doc” Shaner + Flash Gordon = a must buy.

East of West #11 ($3.50) – It is astonishing how consistent this book has been – it is easy to forget how great it is because of its metronmic nature.

Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #1 ($3.99) – Have you seen the preview pages? And you’re wondering why it’s on my list?

Total: $11.48
