Comics Should Be Cheap (5/26/21)

Buying comics can be an expensive hobby. A lot of fans simply can’t afford everything they’re interested in, due to rising prices and the over-saturation of the market with superhero titles.

That’s why we’re here. Every week, the Multiversity staff is asked “What would you buy this week if you couldn’t go over $20?” and shares their reasons why, in order to help others who might have similar tastes make their own decisions in buying comics on a budget. Be sure to leave your own picks in the comments!

Kate’s Picks:

Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #3 ($3.99): Without giving away too much, because I want you all to read our Mignolaversity review that will drop tomorrow featuring yours truly, you’re in for a treat.

The Witcher: Witch’s Lament #1 ($3.99): Toss a coin to your Witcher (or your LCS) and keep yourself entertained with this new series while we wait for Geralt and all his sexy brooding to come back to TV (this year, reportedly and hopefully).

Made in Korea #1 ($3.99): I have a soft spot for 2001’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (as flawed as that film is), so I’m keen to see what this series does for the themes from that film with 20 years of technological advancement in mind.

Classic Pulp: Ghosts #1 ($4.00): These collections of pre-code/classic pulp comics that Source Point Press puts out are a fun trip in the comics time machine. Ghost stories aren’t just for Halloween, and with weather getting warmer (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), sit out by your fire pit, watch the sun set, and read some so bad they’re good ghost stories.

Total: $15.97.

Johnny’s Picks:

Onion Skin ($14.99) – Already a smash hit in its native Mexico, the Top Shelf imprint of IDW is releasing Edgar Camacho’s award-winning graphic novel for the first time in English this week. A funny, romantic story about two rudderless twenty-somethings finding adventure on a road trip in a fixed up food truck, Camacho’s great sense of comedic timing, rich colors and even richer characters speak to the arrival of a great new comic talent. I’ll be happily diving into this on Wednesday evening.

The Goddamned: The Virgin Brides #5 (of 5) ($3.99) – This particular tale of “Biblical Noir” has been pretty damned chilling and brutal, and while this series has been no stranger to that in the past, the first series didn’t affect me in the same way this one has. I’m almost relieved to reach the conclusion.

Total: $18.98. I could definitely blow the budget this week (New Comics Journal! New X-Men! New Beta Ray Bill!), but I’ll keep it to these two that I’m most excited about.

Mark’s Picks:

Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #3 ($3.99) – Ever since I first saw Abigail Larson’s cover, I’ve been geeking out about it. Not only is it a beautiful piece of art, it’s a revealing character moment, and it evokes a story even if you aren’t already familiar with “Lady Baltimore.”

Two Moons #4 ($3.99) – While I enjoyed “Rumble,” it didn’t have much space for quiet introspection, which is the aspect of John Arcudi’s writing I enjoy most. “Two Moons” by the very nature of its subject matter demands this aspect from its writing, so not only is it present in this first arc, but it’s really built into the fabric of this world going forward. Hopefully, a second arc of “Two Moons” will be announced soon.

The Old Guard: Tales Through Time #2 ($3.99) – I don’t know why this is, but I find comics seem to do side stories better than any other medium, especially with creator-owned books. They’re just such a fun way to build characters and the world without derailing the main plot. And given the characters of “The Old Guard” have such long histories, I feel like there’s a lot to explore here.

Ascender #15 ($3.99) – Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen’s series is back for its final arc.

Monstress #34 ($3.99) – Not sure how many different ways I can say this is an excellent book and you should be reading it.

Total: $19.95. Also picking up “Bitter Root” #13.

Luke’s Picks:

X-Men #20 ($3.99) – With “X-Men” soon to be relaunched with Gerry Duggan at the helm, I’m expecting big things from Hickman’s remaining issues.

Stargirl Spring Break Special #1 ($5.99) – I really enjoyed the first season of Stargirl and I’m excited for its second but, aside from this one-shot, there are no other ‘Infinite Frontier’ plans for the character currently announced. Let’s hope this issue delivers and we get a new “Stargirl” series soon.

Beta Ray Bill #3 ($3.99) – If you only buy one comic this week, you could do far worse than “Beta Ray Bill.” The first two issues have been stellar, with Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer combining in spectacular fashion once again.

Total: $13.97.
